Wow I am thinking about getting myself one of these as a cheap daily hack, are they reliable and are parts cheap?

They are very reliable but also very rusty.
With regard to spares being cheap there is just no logic...
...e.g. something the size of a matchbox will cost £190, yet a genuine body panel or major item will be less than 100quid !!?
But then thats Toyota for you ;D

Cheers, Automan, yeah My Ol Man sporting his recovery man jacket to stop him shivering his own timbers! First time we have worked together since my CDT project in 1993! Not got as far as parts yet, rust is not ideal but fixable on this one (i hope), i do know a ford 1800CVH water pump cost £80 last time i got one for the Sierra so, whatever.

they said the reason for them seizing was that one of the vents in the decklid allows water to drip straight onto the alternator bearing. so maybe have a look at diverting the drips?

I think I'll look after it then Theres still a few MR2's about, rot seems to be the biggest issue, some needing the grave cos of it, and for a minter it seems to be about £1500, few hundred quid should get you a ship wreck, a fewmore on RR wouldn't hurt. Always loved these things and when I get some £££'s and time i have a plan.

hammering the alternator eh? sounds like a barry myth for gaining extra bhp! probarbly only works with the right colour combination of magic trees hanging from the rear view mirror though,
glad you got the thing going dude, that canal probarbly didnt help the alternator stay erm, 'Free' if thats the word!
hows the state of the rest of the electrics? are they behaving? or have u replaced/dried the relays etc thoroughly?

Can you not get an exchange re-con alternator? They're usually £30 - £50 regardless of the car Well done on getting it going - I've always fancied an early MR2
