you spend all day doing stuff, and achieve nothing :S Spent the day working on my vans, getting my brown one properly sorted once and for all, and getting the grey one cleaned up cos someone wanted to look at it today with the possibility of sale, which would have been great. (money to spend on the van, and the money to get a decent smoker while I do the vans bodywork) Come 5:30, the engine and box of the brown one are on the floor, and I've become soo waiting for someone to call regarding the grey one, I've decided to start taking things off for mine, and swaping all the best bits of one to the other. The grey one now has the engine and box ready to drop, along with parts of the wiring loom, and parts of the cooling systems so I can convert from early to late engine setup, its also without the wheels and adaptors, the brown one now looks solid on porsche cookie cutters I'm gonna put a golf engine on the other one (over time) and sell it for silly money I think, with a set of merc alloys and a 60mm lowering job, as I'm soooo bloody annoyed with so called mates messing me about over it. (I'm not willing to give it away just cos I have 2!). But for now, I'll just stick the old brown van engine in the grey one so I can move it about, even if it does have knackared mounts, broken exhaust studs and a dodgy ignition system, at least it'll be complete. Looking back I suppose I did a fair ammount really, just nothing "runs" now so I feel like I've achieved nothing. I hope you all had a better weekend than me anyway!.

Yea. Spent a few hours faffing about changing the fuel pump (to stop it leaking) on the 1850. Changed it for a fresh, new one, which instead of leaking from the base of the pump, instead boosted the pressure to about, oo, 14PSI (instead of 3)
So fuel poured out the carbs instead.
Later found out it was a dodgy batch of pumps produced somewhile back. Mechanical arm looks the same though? Oh well.
Gotta love some days!

in the words of Tesco; 'every little helps' Prob is unless we're in the trade or really experienced, our occasional spanner tweakings, learning curves are as steep as a rock climbers wet dream! takes 10 times longer without the Ker-nowledge.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Well after not doing anything mechanical related since I built the Mini, I thought I might have lost the touch before the weekend - but now I'm full of confidence again........especially as replacing the carb on the Rocco has fixed my dash lights as wellll ;D

I like long walks, especially when they're taken by people I don't like.

especially as replacing the carb on the Rocco has fixed my dash lights as wellll ;D Always good when you get a little bonus like that isn't it? I pumped up the tyres on the yellow Skyline last weekend, after which it started when over the last few weeks it seemed to be dead and I've had to move it around a few feet on the starter. Still outweighed by the number of rubbish days, however.

Those "days" have tallied up to three months for me now, changed pretty much the whole cold start system on my golf, then moved on to changing throttle housing, warm up regulater and metering head, now she is running worse than ever, so have to take her to a rolling road tomorrow, fingers crossed..
All because for the first few minutes when its cold it doesnt like to go anywhere, press the throttle it will stall, this has now changes to it currently not going anywhere fast, whilst sounding like a cross between an impreza and a lawnmower.
good job I'm not skint or anything?!

Silly question junglist, but you sure the plug leads are on right? My celica did that after I got them the wrong way round once by mistake.

Junglist - my 16v Mk2 used to do the same thing, took me forever to diagnose it, changed loads of bits including the fuel pump, filter, accumulator, fuel lines, temp senders, went to specialists and everything. It was the WUR (warm up regulator) in the end, should have been the first thing I tried really! I fitted a known good second hand one and set the fuel pressures up properly with a gauge and it has been great since. There are several other factors that can affect K-jet cold starting though so check out the temp senders and wiring on the head, the 5th injector/CSV (Cold start valve) wiring and operation and clean up the ECU multiplug and all engine and gearbox earths. On the Mk1 I think there is an earth to the cam cover that plays hell with various things so check that out. Good luck with it, report back with your findings if you're still having problems and me or someone else might be able to help

I seem to have that all the time at the minute. Not so much that I don't make progress but more that I am not making progress on any of the cars I want to be working on. I worked out on Sunday night that I have averaged over 40 hours a week working on cars this year and pretty much none of that has been spent working on my retro projects

had to crack the other engine apart today, take the water pump and cooling system off cos they are different, and I really wanted to use the later stuff, but some bits look like they'll break if I move them, and I can't afford new parts right now 90% of the way to having at least one decent running van, then I've got to get mounts, sort the exhaust stud, and get the engine and box from the brown one into the grey one. Sometimes I feel like I'm curse word into the wind , but hopefully tommorow it'll be running with a decent engine, a half decent exhaust system, cool wheels and that weber I've been cleaning and rebuilding

I can't remember the last time I had a day in my garage, so anyday there is a productive one in my book. Even if it entails putting on some old vinyl and looking at my tat...
