Morning chaps, I require some of your knowledge again please! I'm currently gathering the bits for my Volvo 202 project and need a bit of help with gearbox selection. I may have asked this question on here before at some point in the distant past to no avail, so appologies if that's the case! What I need to know is are there any gearboxes that will happily mate up to the Daihatsu 2.8 TD engine?I realise that there is probably an infinate amount of stuff that could be made to fit, or that I could modify the 4WD box to make it into RWD only, but if anyone could help me out with some compatability info that would be great. The reason for the slightly obscure engine choice is that I've only got space to squeeze in a four cylinder lump, but need quite a grunty engine - and these lumps enjoy being tweaked for more power. Have some pics for your troubles.... Cheers, Joe.

You want a Daihatsu to Range Rover / 90/100 LT77 bellhousing adapter that will then allow a Sherpa, Freight Rover, SD1, TR7 etc LT77 to fit. With a "mix and match" of Range Rover / 90/110 bellhousing, the adapter and a RWD LT77 it should be a easy job to mate up without any modifications. FWIW Range Rover and 90/110 LT77's have different input shaft lengths and therefore longer bellhousings. The Sherpa / Freight Rover uses the shorter 90/110 type. No point loking for a Defender adapter as they came with the 200TDi which eliminated the need for the Diahatsau conversions

Paul, that's brilliant mate - do you think anyone still does them? Joe You can still get them new but expensive. Plenty around secondhand if you search 4x4 / Land Rover biased sites Try here - www.mdengineering.co.uk/Paul H

Thanks again Paul! Just found someone else doing them for £245, but if I'd thought about the option of a 2WD LT77 in the first place I could have gone for a 200 or 300 TDi lump instead ! Although, it's quite a wide engine and I am pushed for space I suppose. Cheers, Joe.

my old fourtrack was selectable 4x4. it was a 1989 tdi. lovely powerful old lumps
also worth considering is the hated vm lumps fitted to the jeep cherokees and the ford scorpio. the vm can be wound up a lot, i think the earlier 2.4 even more so. yes the headgaskets can go. but get a good engine and change head gaskets and you'll get a good 200,000 with regular servicing.
i replaced the fourtrack with a jeep and it was just as good, local garage wound it up for me.
as they say theres no poke with out smoke.
vm ran lovely on used chip oil too!

(a) parts are far cheaper then Daihatsu (b) no adapter would be needed thus saving £245 (c) I sold a 2.8 Daihatsu engine for £250 without any problem so a big chunk towards a TDi. (d) buy a Disco, break, keep engine, and sell remains - even as a rolling / engineless shell is best way of sourcing a 200Tdi cheaply. Paul H

For the 200Tdi you'd need to find an older unit with the old 'red block' diesel and LT77 if I recall as this shared the bell housing bolt patterns with the 200Tdi - please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!

All 200TDi's have the same bellhousing patern so no need to source an early unit. 300TDi came with the (better) R380 gearbox so maybe that is what you are think about although even 300tdi / R380 have same bellhousing pattern as 200TDi / LT77. Input shaft / bellhousing lenghts differ depensing on application (Defender / Disco) Paul H

Well, thanks for the info today - I've just bought a 'box from James (Mancimp89) on here. A big thanks to Paul (composimmonite) for the info - I've also found someone doing the conversion kit for £200 (although I've got my fingers crossed that my ad on Difflock will come through for me!) Also, thanks to Steve (sleeperviva) for the heads-up on the for sale listing where the 'box was lurking. All in all, quite a productive day - I even managed to squeeze a bit of work in too Cheers, Joe.
