After converting my 318 to a 2.5 (with help from friends) i took it for a quick spin around the yard where the workshop i use is, now i am pretty sure i can feel the clutch slipping when i give the old girl full on welly, also i am sure the rear crank seal is still leaking into the bellhousing even after replacing the seal. now this makes me wonder, does the clutch just need bedding in, or is it normally they work spot on straight out the box, or is the clutch maybe contaminated from oil? cant really take it for a spin as its still not got the powersteering hooked up and its like trying to turn a tank, and also its not road legal so am relegated to driving it in first gear round a yard. i'm not 100% sure it even is clutch slip it might just be ridiculous one wheel spinning(still got open diff ) but i cant tell. am leaning towards clutch slip as when i tried to do a burnout the other night i just did a huge clutch stinking clutch out as opposed to spinning the wheels. so basically, is my clutch buggered or is there a bedding in process i have failed to recognise

Drive along at 15 - 20mph in second, then put it into 5th & boot it.
If the revs rise & there's a smell then your clutch is f*cked. If it judders like a minicab & tried to stall then it's fine.
If it's a brand new clutch trying to do burnouts on it may not have been the best of ideas.... I was taught to give them a couple of hundred miles to 'settle', but that may just have been old wives tale off me dad to stop me driving like a n0bhead.

yes i realise doing a burnout probably wasnt the most sensible thing todo, it was the excitement of having a car that worked again going to my head.
ok cool i'll try to find somewhere to do the 2nd into 5th gear test. just sucks its not road legal at the mo so cant really test that to great. but i'm sure i'll work it out. i'll leave that till tomorrow.
cheers for the advice guys.

did you manage to bleed the clutch ok? they can be b'stards to bleed. you may very well find its wheel spin if you left the 318 dif in as it will be super low geared. some tourings ran 4.44:1 diff ratios against a 325i with a 3.9 (sport), or more likely, 3.64:1. hope you get it fixed edit: the bit about bleeding sounds thick, as it wouldn't let the clutch slip. however I done a auto to manual conversion this week and it was a real pain to bleed . just empathising

yeah i am wondering if its just viscious wheel spin, when it does accelerate it is neck jerking, the original lsd with the car was a 3.9:1 that rocked, then i had a welded diff with 3.46:1 that sucked. and this diff in the 318 feels even more accelerarific than the 3.9. i dunno i'll go down tomorrow bleed all stuff again, and try nickB's suggestion. i am being very paranoid about it all worrying that oil is just seepign back through seal onto clutch and fudging it all ...
oh well i guess i'll see tomorrow

oil from the rear crank seal tends to leak out of the holes in the very base of the bell housing, rather than pick up and splatter over your clutch (unless its very bad). contamination is more likely when the slave cylinder blows out.

yeah ive noticed it leaking out the whole at the base of the bellhousing. when poarked on a hill it leaks out quite quick.
contamination I'm worried about from the clutch sitting about for months from when i bought it and generally being shafted now etc. will soon see though.

i think ive just got ridiculous one wheel spinning at the back whenever i put my foot down.. i dunno cant wait to get it on the road now
