ok I'm having some stock steels banded, question is could I polish the rims on these (they've been paintes for 10 years from factory), am I looking at nitromorse, wet and dry, autosol? how do I stop the shiny shiny rim rusting? or cant I? can I turn these: ![](http://www.hubcaps-wheelcovers.com/photo/to269414.JPG) into ![](http://www.rotashop.co.uk/watermark1~Rota~images/rota/gt3_red_polished_lip-425x425.jpg) (ok thats a Rota GT3 but you know what I mean) ![](http://www.modbargains.com/images/Products/Axis/Axis_OldskoolGoldFace.jpg) ![](http://www.rarerims.co.uk/images/blog/big_GTR-D%20Pink%20with%20polished%20lip%20.jpg)

You can polish steel but as it's harder than aluminium it's that much harder to polish to a high lustre. Once polished it'll probably be difficult keeping it looking good for long even if you laquer it. It is do-able but possibly not worth all the labour. I suspect there's a good reason why you don't see a lot of polished mild steel parts!

Rostyles were chromed, then painted. Later ones were just paint Yep, definitely so. My mate's Leyland Mini came with a set of '70s Rostyles and they were just black and silver paint. The old ones were black paint on chrome.

It will probably corrode and loose that shine in no time at all sadly, even laquer doesnt work that well (see 'raw' bmx/mtb frames).

a lot of those 'raw' frames are discoloured from welding and heat treating - but as you say, a few scratches or stonechips to the laquer and it won't take long to look rough.

what if you blued the wheels with a little heat afterwards? i don't know why but blued steel never seems to rust that quickly

don't know how that would affect the strength of the wheel - incorrect heat treatments can weaken steel significantly.

As has been mentioned, lacquer has trouble adhering to highly polished surfaces....well I guess most things do really! The laquer lifts, moisture gets in and it starts to look a right mess very quickly. This stuff looks like it could do the trick though, it's made by POR15 which is a good start: www.frost.co.uk/item_detail.asp?productID=8775

how quick they will rust will depend on the quality of the steel used and how well you look after the finish. the way i would go about it, would be to run the without laquer and instead use a high quality wheel wax (have a look on a detailing forum to get an idea as to which wheels waxes are best) i use megiuars metal polish on polished alloys and find its pretty good stuff. that doesnt mean to say there arent better products out there though! a good quality steel is pretty resiliant to rusting if its been polished up, i made a few basic workshop tools out of mild when at college around ten years ago, left them in a box in my shed and when un-earthed a few months ago, there was actually very little in the way of rust, considering they had been stored in a damp environment and had never been waxed. obviously with a car wheel, you would have to wax it often due to the harsher conditions they are exposed too.
