Don't worry, nothing serious! A road sweeper caught the wing mirror at 6:40 this morning. I got up to see what the noise was down our narrow street and saw it just clip the mirror. Didn't think much of it, but of course they are fairly solidly mounted on the wings, so it has bent/dented the wing and scratched my lovely new paint down to the metal. I phoned the council, and they have phoned back just now said that thier driver knows nothing about it, and as it was only me who saw it, I cannot make a claim. Gurumph. Please don't bother with replies slagging off the council / it's not fair etc... but can anyone offer advice as to whether I should now report it to the police and pursue, or just swallow my pride and pay Nick to repair/respray it again?

I think its worth contacting the police, as its not your fault, so therefor shouldnt have to pay for it. At the end of the day its your word against his, and you phoned the council so they (should) have a record of your complaint?
Gotta be worth a try, might take a while thou?

That's rubbish. The council will know which sweeper was in your road. It should have paint from your car on it. Go down the depot and point it out.

Put it this way, my wifes Mini got rear ended by a transit van. The car was done about £2500 worth damage, yet the company that owned the van denied they'd had any vehicles in any accidents... 'stards. They wouldn't even put in a claim with their insurers let alone admit liability so we could get a free hire car. total sh**. We even had an independant witness.
Just cos its not right doesn't mean its not the way it is.

Nah, he didn't hit the wing, just the mirror which is solidly bolted to wing, so it was the mirror that then twisted, bent and scratched the wing. Alisairk: - Doubt the bin men will mind, as I guess the street sweepers work for a different department Junglist: I think you right. Thank you for your thoughts.

99% sure the cops won't give a damn. I know of two cases where uninsured drivers have hit people I know and they have been identified to the cops and the cops have not bothered to prosecute as "it is not in the public interest to pursue a prosecution" and we are talking independant witnesses and the lot.
A mate of my wifes was punched and kicked to the floor in an unprovoked attack in town one night receently. the guys that did it were still there when the cops turned up and his wife said "theres the guys who did it!" and the cops weren't interested and the guys that did it just hung round pointing and laughing while the ambulance turned up. No prosecution. Nothing. they didn't even want to take a statement. The guy was in hospital for over a week with his injuries.
Reckon they're going to bother going doing a full CSI on a roadsweeper?
I have the greatest respect for our law and appreciate its a difficult job and all that, but even I am becoming disheartened with the results we get from them. I do believe its because their hands are tied by the courts a lot, but thats IMHO.

Or wait until late, and a few of you in dark clothing climb the wall into the yard. I pick axe handle can do a lot of damage in the wrong hands.
And even more in the right ones.

Failing to stop after an accident........
Ring Police inform them of circumstances - say you know they will never make a case which goes to court but you could do with their help to resolve the impass - and at worst you need them to have a record of it written down.......
Next - councils will always give you the run around on the phone - don't use it....
Write a polite and to the point letter to the council - highways department - explaining the circumstances and the results. Explain that all you want is to cover the cost of repairs and return you car to the pre-accident condition
Road sweeping will 99% be contracted out - council will forward mail to contractors
Contractors will not want to risk loosing contract after all what else can you do with a road sweeper and will want to reolve the matter promptly but they will probably ignore any initial letter
so send a follow up letter same polite tone to the council asking for an update and explain that the matter has now been reported to the Police
Shoudl resolve it fairly quickly after that

Whoa, Whoa, Just remember that certain 'departments' browse forums so please be careful with what you say/post up; don't go incriminating yourself etc.

That's a real shame that the council aren't willing to help. I'd try your luck with the Citizens Advice Bureau...I think they deal with online applications.

We still have free speech. Thought is not a crime. Unless he has been cloned, "a few of you" is not inciting anyone specific to do anything. As I hold no power or influence it was neither order nor instruction.

yea, i heard about a farmer who had his quad bike stolen, so he rang the insurers, they paid out, but the police weren't interested, he replaced it, a few weeks later the replacement was stolen, once again, insurance replaced it, but the premium kept going up, and the police still weren't interested. So, quad bike number three arrives and he has a tracker fitted... once again it goes walkies, calls the police and they hop up in their chopper and where led to a camp of 'Gypsy's' (the traveller ones, not the clothes pegs and lavender type!) so then the police payed them a visit, but couldn't find it so gave up.
By this stage the farmer was rather p!ssed off so phoned the police and said, 'hello, seeing as the tracker leads too this camp my quad must be there... so me and some 30 odd fellow angry farmers are going to take our shotguns for a walk, pay them a visit and see if we cant find it...' to this the police replied 'hmmm, we had better have another look for you then' and sure enough, the police found it under some branches on the back of a pickup....
The moral is: everything can be solved using a shotgun and some threatening action.

OH NO! No offence was meant ...sometimes I do wonder? No offence taken. I just wonder why people are scared of the police doing anything when they take the law into their own hands. When the only reason it is necessary si because the police won't do anything in the first place. Oh don't worry, I'll keep screaming about free speach until they drag me away

I once had a conversation with a copper after he attended a crime I reported. He said basically nothign was going to happen. I said somethig a long the lines of "good job I didn't catch thm at it or they'd be in the hospital now" and straight up he said to me, "Don't ever put a criminal in hospital. If you're going to do it, do it properly. All the way or not at all. You'd be doing us a favour really. Dump the body somewhere round <place name deleted> and even if they get found the polution round there will ruin the forensics. Your chances of getting caught are very slim anyway."
Kinda chilling advice.
