Hi, used to go to the rod events and liked the look of the mini tot rods but didn't like the price, replica glass bodies were available but only seated one, having two kids this was a no go.
so after all the 'can we have one dad' decided to make a two seater. Built from alloy sheet, steel tube, a Honda gx140 engine from a water pump, Honda fifty bits and used some trailer wheels and lawn tractor tyres.
First outing it was a drab brown, basically couldn't make our mind up re colour, it was finally done in Aprilia yellow, with a coat of moondust (fine multicoloured flake) really sparkles in the sun.
I used karting sprockets and centrifugal clutch but this proved to be too high geared with the size of the rear wheels so I had to make a 2:1 reduction, since then the clutch last's ok.
The kids traveled miles, at the big events like Essex we only saw them when it was feeding time or to refuel.
the most important part was it was discreetly designed so I could fit in when they weren't looking, this however wasn't very often.
Its now in storage, as they have there own full size cars now.
Its a shame but safety issues would probably prevent there use at most events today.
Bit more info, I made a drop drop tube front axle on coils with 'A' shape link to limit sideways movement. solid rear axle with hydraulic disc brake and stop lights.
I complicated the steering, making it adjustable left or right hand drive but in the end this was never used. finished off by the wifes triming the seat.
could have done with softer rear tyres, lawn tractor or from a quad as the trailer tyres used have very little give in the side wall making it a bit hard.
