Fellow RR 'ers, help yet again required Friend of mine is into 'slot' car racing big time and scratch builds models of various racing and rally cars from before World War 1 to Present day (he also buys slot cars and heavily modifies/tunes them). His latest venture is a model of a Vauxhall Chevette. What is required is if anybody has some original pictures of a HSR and HS in motorsport events (rally or racing?). Also could anybody give bit of history about these cars (whats difference between HSR and HS?) Thanks P.S. as a side note if any members need advice on slot car world (and I know some of you are 'into it') you are more than welcome to ask/pm me and I will ask him. P.P.S Also if any members want to post up there own Vauxhall Chevette/Opel Kadett, then please feel free as all is welcome.

penski: Many Thanks for that!
Didn't realise there was a US version and most certainly didn't know it was marketed in Japan as well (but then there was a Kadett/Chevette equiv. Sedan at the 'NHOA Hot Olds' meet in Japan in 2004 so that figures).

HS was 2.3 slant 4 normal bodywork apart from front Spoiler (See Penski Chevette) Getrag or ZF 5speed HSR was further development with Wide Box Arches, Slant 4 lump with Lotus alloy 16v head. some suspension differences for homolgation, proper 4 link but still with torque tube (To give a choice of setups to DTV) comprimised it as a roadcar as the suspension wound up. The Chevettes were run by Dealer Team Vauxhall, Bill Blydenstein basically, and never had the budget to compete with the escorts, they were faster on Tarmac but not so good on the loose Had more success in Holland and Belgium on Tarmac than over here really. DTV were running out of HSR 16v heads when they first started, so a lot of HSRs were built with the old slant 4, until someone complained so they started offering owners of standard HSRs engine exchanges, your new 16v with 170ish hp for one of our 2.3sc slant 4 motors on twin 48s, and 240hp ;D No brainer really Thats the only way they could get enough 16v engines to run in the DTV cars ;D HTH a bit Cheers Dom

Just to correct a few points... The std spec of the HS was a 2300 twin cam slant four, the 16v head was a Vauxhall head not lotus (however it was similar but not the same to the lotus head. The lotus head was often used but never homologated afaik) The car came with 175 strombergs and 135bhp. As DTV found that they needed the twin cam engines for competition there was the option to lose the twin cam head, and instead get a single cam 4R4X spec setup, with twin 48s 170bhp/lbft. This was basically the same spec as the group one magnum/firenza engine. (I know this as it was my dad had the first one) The 240bhp engine was a highly tuned twin cam - over time vauxhall had homologated 2.5 and 2.6 versions of the single cam slant four, and then in Old Nail the twin cam with Tecallemit Jackson mechanical FI. the *classic* colours for an HSR (i think) are the Andrew's Heat For Hire colours, the sponsorship that then followed the driver in the move to Opel Mantas.

The 2.3 is a funny engine, as it a slant four when it heated up the block would go bannana shaped. This stopped the crank spinning, so they built the engine up quite loose to prevent it happening!
