so i saw all the cool modded shoppers on here (particularly slaters and steathstylz efforts) and thought id have a crack myself.
seeing as i upgraded my GF from a free '70s halfords 'freewheeler' to a trek jack at christmas, i had the aforementioned sitting in my workshop, too close for comfort to an angle grinder and welder
the victim-
first, i pulled the 'guards and brakes off, then took the bolt out that held the seatstays onto the seattube and doubled as the seatclamp too (yes, really- only the finest available from halfords!!) then jumped up and down on the downtube to lower the back end til it looked right. i also swapped the old odd-sized wheels for a pair of cheapo 20" bmx rims with some £10 market-special whitewalls-
then, things got serious, and i made this-
(a top yoke)
and these-
(dropouts)
both out of 3mm plate. then i went into hyperdrive, so i didnt really take any pics, but i also cut a bottom yoke out of 1/4" plate, and cut two lengths of 25mm dia 2mm wall tube at a length of the headtube + the stock fork length + about an extra 10". basically, i was making a set of triple clamps for it.
i chucked it all together quickly, a few heavy tacks on it, then lopped the folder section out of the centre of the downtube and slipped some exhaust tube over the frame and moved the two halves in til it looked about right and wleded that too, which gave me this-
it ended up about 8-9" over on the forks, and 4-5" on the frame, i think!
it still needs apes, a sissy bar, a longer seat and the cranks shortening, then itll be ready for some paint.
it rides really, really well though!!
a very natural riding position, and perfect show transport for this year
