Hello RR'ers. I seem to be the serial topic maker here, but you cant have too much knowledge, eh? Eventually, I'm going to swap the 50cc honda melody engine (in my honda melody) to a 125cc honda dio engine. When I'm the right age of course. And yes, it has been done apparently. Mainly to honda spree's but they're very similar. These are all spree's, but it gives you an idea of what i want to do. What i need to know is what you do to fit a dio engine, from what i read its fairly simple.. apparently the modding of a shock mount is all that needs doing, but i've also read that you may need to mod some more mounts to make one fit, i just need to know what i'd need to modify. Cheers for reading Jono. ;D

Anythings possible but there are aspects you need to consider like how will an insurer react to a 50cc moped turned into a 125cc motorbike (albeit scooter), DVLA will need to be informed of change of catagory (moped to motorbike), front brake will need upgrading etc. I assume you have the Melody on the road at present so ask your current insurer what they think but be prepared for them to refuse to insurer a learner on a home modified moped turned into a 125 without at least requring an engineers report. In the end unless just a fun machine with no intention of putting on the road the sensible thing to do would simply repair the Spree that is going to donate the engine and sell the Melody. There again I never did the sensible thing when I was young either ;D

on the law front i'm no help, ireland is great in that respect, just bung it in and go.
moped engine swaps are quite easy compared to geared bikes, there is only one bolt holding the engine in and it doubles as the swing point for the rear suspension. Just make sure the rear wheel is in line with front, got any links to people who have done it? i'd like a good read.

Nice for some eh?
I don't have any links no, i'd like a good read myself.
There are a few people that have done it, but they're so old that the pictures have died etc.

well i have done quite literally some searching and i found that: 1 honda don't make a 125cc two stroke scooter never ever did. 2 a honda dio 50 can be bored and stroked to 125cc, which is pretty amazing, but silly, lots of engineering work and it'll probably blow up or get eaten by a water cooled 70cc. 3 the only big two-stroke worth putting into is a runner 180, and that'll vibrate like a curse word 4 their might be a 90cc honda two-stroke scooter, brain too slushie right now to find it.

There's the honda lead, another 80s scooter. Which has a 125cc air cooled 2 stroke. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_NH_series

Not quite a help to you sir, but i had planned to do a Runner 180 lump into a Honda Express conversion some years ago as a drag scooter..........may still do ;D
As has been said, Honda 125 scooter engines are sumwhat unheard of as they were quite happy with the Cub and CG125 models, but a modded 50cc Melody engine is not unheard of..............DO IT!

when i built the first monkey, I changed it from 49cc to 125. did a cbt told insurance company and they didnt even ask for a letter as there was a 125 model of the same type of bike available, it did however cause the insurance to go from 130 fully comp to 3rd party only and 250 quid.. also DVLA I simply filled out the new engine number and cc capacity and sent the log book off. never got a letter asking for engineers report again I presume as the engine had come from the same sort of vehicle

A 125 would be really cool in that, those pics look awesome. Are you definately going for a dio engine? I was thinking, if you wanted something really quick you could use a 85 or a 65 motocross engine My kx85 puts out 30bhp ( ) and I'm sure they cuoold be de-tuned for road use? Still though, if not, that 125 dio engine swap sounds really good ! Good luck with whatever you do with it

Ive found that the honda 'NH Series' looks more suitable. Same era and all that. i'd have to get a parts one though, to nick the engine mounts and that.
