Rob, if that Duratec of mine is rebuildable I'd be happy to donate that to the cause (150BHP and very light). I'd also be tempted to go with a good condition Sprint engine over the V8 TBH. I reckon it would suit the character of the TR7 more, in addition to being cheaper to do. But as you know I'd also change the suspension on your car before any of that. And maybe before you ditch the 8v engine, address the timing issues (cam and distributor) as I'm sure that is costing you power. As you know I'm loving the wheels .

Any ideas for a cheap upgrade in noise, i can live with the lack of go. As ChasR has stated "it could not pull the skin of a rice pudding" but the fact that it sounds like a van is worse haha. Would Carb trumpets make a difference? or anything short of a whole new exhaust... An no, a V8 is off the cards for at least a year or so

Cherrybomb and carb trumpets or a more "open" filter should get you some noise!

No idea what i am looking at with cherry bomb's, been looking around at trumpets for the HS4's, not too expensive with some sock filters.

Lovely looking TR7, especially with the new wheels. Brilliant condition interior too. The Rover V8 conversion does sort of make sense as the TR7 V8 was obviously available new. TBH though, I always think the Rover V8 is a bit of a wet lettuce in terms of real performance. Yeah they sound great on idle and when you blip the throttle. Lots of low down torque means loads of wheelspin and burnout capability yet for all the shouting they very rarely make much more than 200 bhp when modified which is pretty poor really. Obviously you can get more power than this but it gets very expensive. I suppose it all depends what your after, but if I wanted to put a V8 into something I'd want it to be worth the effort in terms of performance. If your special edition TR7 were mine, I think I'd keep the standard type engine and sensibly modify it - full SS kit and a ported head and different cam etc.

that's really nice - I've recently got a 1981 TR7 which has been standing for ages so I've been half looking at replacement wheels as my tyres have loads of tread but must be 15 years old at least! Your thread has given me a few ideas for cheap some cheap options as the car is supposed to be going back on the road for as little cost as I can get away with.

Currently driving a '68 Karmann Ghia as my daily. Don't ask about previous cars - there have been way too many and I stopped counting at 160!

Do NOT buy ram pipes with gauze filters, get some and use decent metal backed Green/ITG/K&N/Pipercross filter assemblies over the top, or at worst filter socks You'll need to re-tune the carbs after too, probably need new needles as well, so budget for a little extra and some time to get it running right. I'd take the back-box off and see how it goes from there...

What about fitting a 2.0 16v Rover 800 engine? With the right (Sherpa i think) bellhousing that will fasten onto your gearbox, plenty of torque too, generally a nice enigne (if you can put up with splats of oil on your driveway).

Not thought about the rover engines, could be interesting. Putting off an engine change for a while now, as just moved house. Main things to get done is the brakes / suspension then possibly a new distributor. All the boring stuff
