As the title says!
What I am refering to is if tyre hasn't worn down to illegal limit should it still be changed regardless due to age etc.
I seem to remember a friend of a friend of a mate etc telling me that after 5 years on the road a tyre may need changing even if still good tread.
Any advice greatly received.

It depends where it's been kept. The UV in sunlight attacks the rubber and it dries out. That's when you start getting cracks etc and the tyre isn't as strong as it should be. My back tyres are pretty old, but they are in the dark most of the time tucked up well under the bodywork or in the garage. They seem fine but I might change them to match the fronts when it goes back on the road.
Only one thing to do with an old tyre with plenty of tread before you throw it out...

If its been on a car stood still for 5 years then it's probably deformed.
If its been off a car, kept in the dark and had a decent amount of pressure in it then it'll last 5 years easily.

Speaking of which, I was in the local VW main dealers yesterday - old chap in there getting his car serviced, service man says "Your front tyres are worn down to 3mm"
Old chap says "How long do you think they`ll last ?"
Service man says "That all depends on your driving style sir"
Old chap goes "But can you give me some idea, one month, two ?"
Service man "All I can tell you is that they are 78% worn sir, I am not obliged to tell you how long they will last"

Thanks people  It's just the Yokohamas on my Toyota have been on nearly 6 years and still haven't worn down so was naturally concerned. |

UV will weaken the rubber and every thing I've heard says 7 years in sunlight, then they should be replaced.
They always start to craze before they will give out anyway so just keep an eye on the sidewalls and tread area.
Also depends on how you drive.
Also also they tyre compound hardens with age so you won't get as good grip in the dry with an old tyre as a new one. The sidewalls will also slightly stiffen meaning latteral weight transfer and riide qualityy is affected. In all cases this is fairly slight effects but if you are wanting 100% out of your car, you won't get it with old rubber.
I've run cars with tyres date coded a decade or more before. I've seen 1960s Firestone Gumball remoulds on one car I bought, still holding air... They stopped making them in 1968 or something. LOL. Didn;t drive too far on them though!

I had some old tyres on the Volvo, looked fine, but the sidewalls had gone soft and wobbly, the ride was entertaining but not so safe, new tyres made such a difference.

Come think of it my Volvo 360 developed a bubble on the tread when i was crusing-fast on the motor way, really bumpy and quite scary really. drove a bit slower, still dangerous though  |

its a pain,but its also poxy EEC regulations,if (in theory) you go into a main dealer to buy fr'instance some front pads and the guy behind the counter doesnt find out if you're a competant mechanic,and you fit the pads wrongly and say ,cause a crash,its the garage that can be held at fault.its pc gone barmy.

the tyres on our 1303 had been fitted about 6 years ago and barely used, when I bought the GT wheels and had new tyres fitted the difference was amazing, the old rubber was not cracked at all, but seemed to have hardened a lot, so I'd change every 5 years regardless of use |

Winner, I'm still on the factory tyres fitted in 1998 in Japan which have covered 32K miles.  Still work fine but one has an extremely slow puncture it would seem, tread is absolutely fine though. That's what you get for buying a car from the elderly. |

When i bought my mk1 olop, it still had the original Dunlop XYZs on the rears, cracked to hell and probably very dangerous after 22 years in the North Yorkshire sun.
Still ran on them for another 5k !!!

Was not aware of that! thanks ;D Now, Now people I do hope this forum is not encouraging bad/anti social behavour! Right I will change 'em! I only trundle to work and back in winter BUT come summer I will be using car to go abroad at times so will be going down motorways etc. |
