A couple of Sundays ago my mate Steve was cruising down the A43 near Silverstone when the engine suddenly went dead. His exact words were... "We appear to have broken down, it doesn`t sound mechanical though"
He coasted it into the petrol station and popped the bonnet and after 10 minutes checking for fuel and a spark found no problems. He popped the oil filler cap off and span the engine over, the exhaust cam wasn`t turning!
He got it back tothe workshop and started to strip it down.
Nothing obvious at first...
Jumped links...
130,000 mile old tensioner...
Bent valves in the head...
He stripped the head down...
And removed the bent valves, 3 exhaust and 1 inlet...
The bent valves cracked the valve guides...
He turned up this tool to press the guides out...
And cleaned the head up in the parts washer...
The effects of unleaded petrol....
He sent the head off for new valve guides to be pressed in and the valve seats recut and got it back looking like new...
And refitted it in time for work on Monday morning the following week...
He's been running it for a week now and he says its running much better than it did before probably due to the valves atually sealing themselves in their seats and most importantly it has lost the "death-rattle" on start up.
I was impressed with his Racer style motivation, fully equipped workshop helps too
