Here is the question...... Nicola's daughter is getting her Father to finance a new car on "scrappage" Basically the Corsa I got her for £70 about 18 months ago is getting chopped in for some Suzuki model. I guess the thought of £2000 off a new car, and having her dad in hand appeals to her, as it would most youngsters. I think we have spoken about the evil that scrappage poses to us and retros till death, so this is not about that. The dealership for whatever reason wants her to tax and insure the car at the time the deal is done. So..... Where does an 18 year old girl get a weeks worth of cheap insurance, (not driving the car, so not at risk there, as the dealers pick up the car) Ideally those of you with experience can probably direct us to websites etc. Thanks. www.retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=readersrides&thread=47963&page=1Here are two pics, before and after......

its hard for young drivers with old cars to get short term insurance. what u can do is take out a full policy and cancel it within the first 14 days, they can only then charge u an admin fee, usually £25, however some companies don't charge you anything.

Not sure if it's still true but last time I went to collect a new car for a mate the dealers wouldn't let it off the premises without a fully comp insurance and tax? sumink about duty of care? IE it's thier responasability to ensure the car is fully leagal before handing it over, wouldn't even let me take it away on me recovery (which was why I was there). Could he not insure and tax it and why the short term insurance, what's she gonna do after it's stopped? or do you meen she has to be insured on the corsa as well as the new car ?

A lot of dealers provide a week's cover with car whilst you get yourself sorted. Like the Aviva one you get when buy a car on evilbay. Saves them waiting for the buyer to hang on for docs in the post too I spose. Presume they're not offering this?
Pretty sure all the temp cover types are over 21, if not older.
Hang on - is this because she needs the Corsa on cover whilst she waits for them to sort the Suzuki? If so, switch cover to the Suzuki and then add Corsa on temporarily. Most will do this whilst you try to sell your old car.

When I bought my new Fiat 500 the dealer threw in 7 days worth of free insurance. They do it on all models to allow them to register it. I'd just sort of assumed that was standard for all dealers. Ask them, maybe they're just being tight?

no he means the corsa has to taxed and insured, probably so the dealer can pick it up from his house or where, ever why does he not put the car in his name and he insure the corsa and do the deal and just insure his daughter for the new car?

Again aviva, use it quite regulrly, all you need is a dealer code. go and see if your local auctions do this offer and collect doc from them.

Thanks all, as Rooster says, the Corsa has to be insured, MOT'd and Taxed. (Not sure who gets to keep the tax money) She never got to do much more than sit with her mates on the driveway at her dads, as she is doing her test in May.
So the Corsa has not been insured or used at all.
But the dealer has the ruling above.
I think the way for them will be to insure the Corsa at £1400 for 3rd TPFT and then to move the insurance to the Suzuki Alto (I found out) which is £1000 Fully comp, and hopefully get some money back in the deal.
Beyond that, I am glad she has got her dad sorted, because I would not get myself manipulated like that..... BANGER for a first car, then maybe a good 2nd hand one etc.....
At least I can say that I am glad her dad and Nicola are still on a good footing, as it saves me loads.

BANGER for a first car, then maybe a good 2nd hand one etc..... cant help on the insurance side of things but just wanted to agree with this^^ just a thought and I'm not sure if it works this way or not as she has yet to pass her test but would she build a no-claims bonus till she passes?

No idea Bernie, but like her mum said earlier today, its their problem now, common sense does not come into their heads. We have done what we could. The Corsa cost nothing, relative to buying a new car for a distractable 18 year old..... lets hope she proves me completely wrong. ;D ;D ;D

A mate ordered a new car for his wife last year under scrappage. Due to spec / extras ordered there was a delay in the car being avaliable during which time the MOT and tax expired on the old car. No trouble what so ever with dealers accepting the car in scrappage without tax (or MOT).

Hi Grizz, When is she collecting her new car? I have a dealer code for 7 days free insurance but I am up in scotland so I would have to post it down which will take time. The rules of the scrappage scheme regarding insurance mot etc are- the car must not have run out of Mot within 14 days of order and must be taxed and insured as well, the tax belongs to the owner of the car so she should get it back and get a refund for 5 months. pm me if you want to set it up and I'll get it sorted on monday. Andy

Yep, you build no-claims whether you've a full licence or not. My bro had 2 years by the time he finally passed his test! Oh, and that was earnt on an AX that owed us £90 so I agree with your point too! Each to their own I 'spose and I may have changed my view in 13.5 years when little 2fster hits her 17th!
