I have 2 Toshiba laptops (different models). The oldest one still works fine but the hinge for the screen has snapped at one side, lots of the plastic case has cracked and fallen off and there is exposed electrickery (nothing live).
The newest one is fine but the 4 of the keys have been snapped off including the mounts etc so they won't work.
Which should I look at fixing? The keyboards look the same so could I remove the keyboard from the old laptop and fit it to the new one?
I've never done anything like this before so it'd all be guesswork on how to get it to bits.

I would fix the newer one as there is no fixing of broken plastics and hinges, you would need to find a new carcass!
Make sure that you research how the things come apart - laptops are never the easiest thing often with random clips and screws all over the place! - google for "How to dismantle Toshiba <Model No.>".
Once you have the two apart, you will be able to see if the modes of the keyboards are the same... If so, it is normally just some screws and a ribbon connector.
You can also either still make use of the old one by rehousing it and using a USB keyboard or strip the thing down for spares! Sell the hard disk and the ram separately on ebay and then the rest of the carcass as spares in one lot - might pay for a new keyboard if needed.
If you need any more advise, please let me know.
Rysz.

With my old toshiba when one of the hinges broke I found the kitchen wall a very useful screen stop ( wouldn't hold the screen ) Was considering a piece of metal with a bend of somwhere between 90 and 45 degrees and just sit the laptop on it and see how it goes but managed to get the use of another!

I second what Rysz says. Plus I have actually had the same thing happen with my toshiba, the hinge seized up and snapped where it mounts to the screen, then over time the wireless wire snapped as a result. I decided to buy a laptop off ebay with a faulty motherboard and swapped everything I needed over onto mine. If yours is like mine the hinge cover just has two screws at the back then should pop off. The keyboards arent actually fixed into place with screws, just clip in under the hinge cover so once thats off it should pop out. Then unclip the ribbon connector and remove.

Best thing with the keyboard is to take it off and compare the model numbers underneath. If you give us the model number, I can see if my Tosh Engineers book has the distructions for it.

The one with broken hinge is a Toshiba Equium L100-186 Model Number:PSLA5E - 002005AV
The one with the broken keyboard appears to have no model number. I'll take a photo later see if anybody recognises it.

Just googled your model number and it looks identical to my satellite l100, and the satellite pro that I used to repair mine, guess they didnt bother making too many different cases. In fact Ive still got a spare keyboard from when I fixed mine if you want it for nothing? Model number is mp-03266gb-9202, googling it says it fits equium and satellite l100 models. PM me your address if you want to try it and ill send it you tomorrow.

Any ideas how to find what model a laptop is? The sticker on the bottom is blank? Will I be able to check in the settings somewhere?
