Right then, hands up who knows how oil-burners work... Having some issues with this beast: It will turn over, but steadfastly refuses to run. Glowplugs have been changed, the fuel pump has been stripped & cleaned.... as diesel engines rely on compression to combust the fuel rather than compression & spark, there can't be alot more than that? Or am I being dense??

Couple of things to check that you already probably have. Are the glow pugs getting power. Is the pump timed correctly. Are you getting diesel to the injectors. And like impstop says make sure you get all air out of the system. Slacken all the nuts on the injector pipes and turn the engine over to make sure you just have clean diesel coming through.

I spent the best part of 2 days trying to get the Astra going after changing the fuel filter... I had dislodged the seal when fitting the filter, and replaced with the old one, not realising that it wasn't as thick as new one... Also, I've found that the length of time that the glow plug light is on for bears no relation to the amount of time that there is power to plugs... have to leave it another 5-6 seconds before the relay clicks off.

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

Is it the original 2 1/4 engine with a cable pull stop? If so make sure the cable return spring is there and the fuel stop is in the open position, as in not pulled.
If so make sure the glow plugs are wired correctly, not in parallel, they are in series. If one packs up they all stop working. Make sure the wire on the first one links to the bottom of the second, top of the second to the bottom of the third etc. Don't test them on their own, they are not 12V, they about 2.5 each so they will burn out instantly.
Assuming you have no air leaks up to the fuel filter you need to bleed the filter, top bajo open hand pumping until the air has gone, tighten it up. Then move to the Injection pump and on the side are 2, 8mm sized bleed screws, open the bottom one, bleed it in the same way, close it, open the top one, do the same. Now loosen all the pipes feeding the injectors, not all the way off just a couple of turns. Now crank the engine on the key untill all the bubbling goes and clear fuel comes out. Tighten them up and after using the heater plugs for about 10 seconds (yes 10 seconds) foot on the floor and start it... If that doesnt work come back to me...

Have you tried squiting a bit of silicon spray down the inlet while you crank it. Sounds air in the fuel to me.
