Driving to work this morning the Scirocco wouldn't idle properly, it stalled 4/5 times. Then, all of a-sudden it recitified itself.......??
This idle issue happened even when the car was up to temperature, so I'm not sure it was anything to do with the sh*tty auto choke on the Pierburg!
I'm kinda wondering it's dizzy/leads/plugs related - any ideas?

i had a rubbish idle in my golf which was caused by the rotor arm which had a crack in it, if that helps?

my AX used to do that, and it was poor air flow

many reasons I'm sure... air flow - fuel starvation - short in the ignition... thats not much help is it, but be safe in the knowledge that if i could help, by golly I WOULD!

Ok - UPDATE:
I'm sure it's not a short in the ignition because the revs drop right down before it stalls - it doesn't just cut out.
Just checked for blockages and also checked the rotor arm - it's neither of those.
However - I've just looked at the fuel filter, and there doesn't seem to be any fuel there, and the filter looks a bit black...... I think I'll try putting a new fuel filter on and see if that cures it....
Anyother suggestions welcome however.

irocco in da house: Anyother suggestions welcome however.
Bad or blocked fuel filter, bad fuel, colgged injectors, intake gaskets leaking, to me it sounds fuel related. Pour a bottle of STP injector cleaner in a 1/4 tank run it down to almost empty, fill up with new fresh gas. To check the intake gasket, start it up, let idle, spray lots of brake cleaner, starter gas or other where there are gaskets on the intake side, if it goes up in revs there's a leak there....
DP says: Could be 200 other things or it just wanted to f*ck with you, it's an old car....

split or loose vacuum hose? Can cause all manner of idling woes and usually the last thing people check.

its the carb, my mk2 golf used to do this all the time. the waxstat thing goes nuts when worn and keeps kicking the choke on and off. new waxstat will (fingers crossed) sort it. it did mine.

What's one of them? where does it go? where can I get one from? how much are they? how easy is it to fit a new one?

Further UPDATE:
Just let the car run for 10 minutes so the autochoke cam off.....and the car idled fine??
Could it have been a bit of sh*t in the carb that's since cleared???

Could well be. Treat it to some carb cleaner or summat anyway, just in case it moves somewhere else

don't be fooled, it will do it again, probably when ure tooling down the mway and the engine cools in the airflow, carb will think "aye up its getting nippy" and turn the choke on again and then youll grind to halt in a comedy fashion.
ps the waxstat is the y piece looking thing that screws to the front of the carb.
