I'm making a project for uni the brief is this
Maximum height of rider and kart 60cm. Maximum spend £40 Deadline 22nd march. Must be powered by the hands and be able to negotiate a figure of 8 course in the fastest possible time,
Still in the design phase but will be building next week. I will post a photographs up as the build progresses.
Heres a taster a few video of the karts that have raced in previous years.
I'm intending to bring the kart to the gathering

i'd be looking at building something that worked a bit like a rowing machine i reckon, pulling a couple of ropes towards your self with alternate arms should produce more power than working a crank set up, possibly harder to steer though?

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

the problem is we are really very tightly constrained time wise only got 4 hours workshop time. I like the idea of a rowing machine steer with your feet. But it only provides drive some of the time. A well set up and correctly geared crank is more efficient. This beastie is going to be converted once its finished at uni and given a lawnmower engine for the gathering

steer with the rear to help make it more simple?
Sounds like a good project though. Should be fun.

Sounds fun. What building are you doing it in? I might pop over and have a look.
We were supposed to make a gravity kart using solely cardboard but apparently H&S banned the university from doing it.

Ok Alma workshop is now shut and the race is on monday. So now I hit problems the tilt steer mechanism we had designed incorperated a wooden bearing housing that split under load. So I decided to fabricate a steel replacement that would have worked nicely at which point my welder decided it no longer needed a wire feed.
The motor doesn't turn and the feed isn't jammed any ideas what might cause it?

pinch wheel not living up to its name?does the drive feed motor turn ?is the drive wheel set for size of wire youve got in it .6/.8/1.0/1.2?is the trigger dodgy, process of elimination dude.....:)try disconnecting the torch and putting 12 volts across the drive motor connections,if the motor turns take the torch apart and short the wiring from the switch or do a continuity check on the wiresif good its the switch and without not knowing what type of switch it is ill be typng all bloody night telling you how to take it apart and fix it:) still got my number rob

Lets clear up car terms: "Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car. "Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car. "Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence. "Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.
