Just trying to get some thoughts on the subject of door mirrors for the Viva, according to the MOT testers manual I only need an interior mirror as it was first used before August 1978. I have taken the drivers door mirror off for now as it is broken anyway but not sure if should leave it without any mirrors at all, fit a nice pair of matching door mirrors or fit some fender mirrors instead. So how many mirrors do you guys roll with?

The Hillman had no exterior mirrors. I fitted a peep mirror to the drivers door (at the bottom rather than hanging from the top window frame) as Mrs_Seth prefers something to nothing.
Best view is with convex mirrors on the wing. You hardly have to take your eye off the road and you can see everything. That's what the Herald has.

I hate not having a wing mirror. The Bond didn't have any when I got it and I feel so much better now I've sorted one out for the driver's side. Haven't fitted one to the passenger side yet, but as they're bullet mirrors I doubt I'll see much out of it anyway!
The Benz came with just one mirror too. That got a passenger side mirror when I found one, but again it's just decorative as all I can see is scenery out of it.
So... one door mirror, and a rear view mirror.

drivers door mirror is about the only thing i wont take off to be honest, much as the car looks cleaner without one they are just to important these days, you can get small chrome clip on ones for cars with quarter lights if you want to remove it for shows, they look period but still work ok, better than wing mirrors i reckon. take your pick on here, theres a few clip on options. www.classic-car-accessories.co.uk/acatalog/classic_car_parts_EXTERIOR_8.html

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

Haha surprised that thing even moves with that much stuff on it. Just been trawling ebay & it's full of boring bullet style door mirrors so I think I am just going to go without mirrors for now & see how I get on, plus the weight saving will go someway towards offsetting the boat anchor off a Pinto under the bonnet Edit Someone tell me that a Viva would look stupid with these mirrors dez is selling so I don't have to buy them

definately no mirrors. iv never owned a car with external mirrors. works fine if you have good narrow b pillars (and if your head can spin like an owl on speed). imo mirrors are overrated just a good over the shoulder should do.

Haha, this contrasts with the 'modern' drivers who seem to use their mirrors infrequently if at all ;D Always found the passenger side mirror completely useless, the interior one is a godsend, and if I need to look right then I can turn my head.

A nice big pair of fender mirrors are amazing, you can see everything - no blind spots! Definitely at its best when you're going down the motorway.

Just as an aside - if you rock up at your driving test in your own car - for example a herald with no exterior mirrors - I'm guessing the test would be a lot easier, as there are 66% less mirrors to have to check...

Plus it freaks the sh$t out of my passengers too, left hand drive AND no mirrors?! !!!

^^ nar, they'd chuck it as unsuitable for taking a driving test in (and you lose your appointment, and the fee) It's worth checking the requirements, there are some moderns you can't take a test in because of the pee poor rear quarter visibility! Basically, whatever it is must have door mirrors, seatbelts, headrests on the seats (proper ones, not clip on) and a whole bunch of other retro-unfriendly stuff.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

would you not just be expected to keep looking over your shoulder? Thus making it harder probably?

I can still remember the look on the examiner's face when I did my test in my dad's decidedly crusty Montego Countryman Estate, with a British racing green shell, and mismatched doors and tailgate (it had its full complement of mirrors though). Never realised they could refuse the car as unsuitable.
