possible help; is one of the bolts into the alternator too long? had this on a bmw , the bolt that held the earth strap on was too long and touched the "live" workings inside the alternator. lots of smoke but instantly when battery was connected not just when trying to start it. I hope that is help rather than confusion

Could be that a wire got trapped when the alternator was replaced, and is shorting out... I had it happen to me on the Astra, though in that case it flattened the battery...

|
... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

Make sure on the main positive feed it has a small insualting washer or stepped washer going inside the alternator body. If thats ok make sure non of the positive wiring or connections are touching the altenator earthed body.
Last thought, does it have a metal cover over the back of it, if so make sure the bolts aren't too long and touch it...

As my temp gauge don't work even thought replaced everythink you can think of. it only works when it wants to

If the electric fan doesnt come on often then it can start to sieze up, being winter it probably wont be on much. If when it does come on it is slow to start and is stiff then the current draw would be too much and blow the fuse.... other option is maybe the fan switch on the rad is dead. To test it, pull the wires off and join them with a paper clip with the ign on, see if the fan works...this should point to the problem....
