hicky131 in da house: here's a couple of pics of the legendary square four suzuki rg 500
I have for a brief time been the (un-) happy owner of a Suzuki RG V 500 Gamma, it spent most of the time in the shop with the mechanic trying to get it to run on all 4-cylinders but when it did, WOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!! Traded it for at Kwack Z1300 with 2 more cylinders....
The ulitimate 2-stroker must be the last of the BIG BIKES in MotoGP the Aprilia RSW 500, man that was a bike and a half!!! No tire manufacturer could produce a tire with enough grip to get it's full power down in the tarmac, that's power!!! I have had 4-laps on Aprilia's test track on one of these bikes and I was scarred, but tried to do something of it, after hooking up the computer we found out that I have used about 20% of the bikes performance, IT'S A MONSTER....
These carbs are €4.500 each!!!!!!
This is our mechanic here at Starol Racing, Håkan Olsson with his Aprilia RSW 125 Racer, 2005 he scored his 10't Swedish Road Racing Championship, he also has a bunch of Scandinavian and European Champ winns uder his belt, the last 8 years he's been unbeatble here in Scandinavia and 2006 he's taking a time-out, yea right....
This is my Boss and the owner of Starol Racing, Eva Hällström with her Yamaha YZR 250 Racer during the 2005 seasson....
....sadly the seasson started out with a small accident, a split crank at 230kph....
...4 weeks later she was back on the bike, faster than ever.....
A few years back I did one seasson of Pro Stock Snowmobile drag racing on tarmac, these beasts 1000cc V-4 2-strokers with NOS gave close to 500hp and pull of was insane.....
DP says: Among the scarriest things I have driven......
A couple of years ago i had a front wheel hub and disc made up for my old 1979 Spondon YZ 250 road racer by the local sidecar chassis builder Terry Windle, and he had a V8 2 stroke motor lurking in the back of his workshop. It turned out to be two Yamaha TZ 750 top ends bolted to a specially made block which was used is some sort of race car which he built. He said it had around 300 hp,weighed curse word all and was apparently banned from the class it was entered in for leaving everything for dead! Pity i cant find any pics of the car. I can just imagine seeing 8 pipes stuck out of the back of the thing! ;D ;D
The TD5 engine in modern Land Rovers is a fine piece of kit. It has 232 lb-ft of torque (in the manual version) at 1950 rpm and 136bhp at 4200 rpm.
Overview of the camtrain. Large rockers drive the injectors mechanically, generating immense fuel pressure without the need for unsafe high pressure fuel lines.
The same point, with the main rockers removed. Visible is the cam, with two small roller rockers underneath operating the inlet/exhaust valves. Large spring is the injector return spring, with the solenoid to initiate opening behind it.
The head removed. Note the dishes in the cylinders that allow for maximum combustion from the fuel air mix.
Me before stripping (Was a bad idea) one of the injectors. Size man, Size!
What gets me about this engine is that it's designed to be used for 200,000 miles without any major effort, and THEN still meet any emissions regulations that are enforced by that point, whilst still returning the same fuel consumption and output.
Serious pieces of kit, tough, clever and reliable to boot. Centrifugal secondary oil filter too, oil is sprayed at high pressure onto a rotating dish, flinging small, unfilterable particles into the sides of the canister wall, which is replaced every 12000 miles!
Then decided that it definitely wasn't 'user servicable' (as one piece of grit in it will ruin it), so I put the sol back on ;D Didn't have a small compressor that i needed, anyway (or think I would have done).
Took the turbo to bits mind, soon found out how frail the turbine blades are (hey, I was stress testing!)
Not sure how much service they have - they're either samples or have something wrong with them, from Land Rover. Other groups have an older PSA diesel.
Although the engines were 'dry', the injectors were still full of fuel and there was fuel in the cylinders, so one must presume they have been run at some point.
Previous students have buggered the timing to hell, so ours was only doing half a turn on a bar when we tried. Didn't have much success trying to retime it, not as simple in a 5 cylinder, so compromised and just made sure each piston was a little down when reassembling. (Was purely a strip and assemble and writeup).
The TD5 is good, but most people prefer the 300TDI (2.5tdi) as it has simular power, is bomb proof, simple to fix, yet not quite as crude as a tractor engine and don't forget, a landy is made for ragging round fields, covering in curse word, and soaking in water.... even the throttle cable is fly by wire... no cable.
at college today laying slabs we had this dirty great big cemet mixer ones that swivel round by a lil wheel with a lovely old 2 stroke diesel......crank starter oh what a lovely sound.....and its only a bloody cement mixer...retro of course
Clive Bakers RS250 Apprillia with a 570cc RG500 motor in it ;D Built by my mate Bruce at CND Trickest road bike I have ever seen and worst case of "I wunt dat won" by the owner ;D never knows when to stop with trick bits
one from my good friend, who has been lurking on this site for a while but has never signed up. this is a half attempt at getting him to sign up ;D ;D
if you look past the wires, you would probably see a vw engine, to be more exact the ABA 16vT lump, which is a hybrid between the 16v head, and 8v block, with a crazy turbo bolted on the side for good measure ;D
that was running 1027 at 10k rpm..........not bad for an engine that originated in a 100 brake 8v golf in 1990 ;D
thats a link of it in a VW saviero running a 9 second quarter from a FWD car
I know the army still use the 300tdi`s in their vehicles as its possible to repair them easily without the aid of a computer. They only have around 113bhp compared to the td5`s 136 but with the td5 you can fit a larger intercooler and get it chipped to take it upto 180bhp and still retain the warranty
The 300tdi engine is still in production in brazil but is just about to be killed off as its impossible to get it to achieve current emmissions levels. They also build a 2.8 300 block used in brazilian ford pick ups with more power and torque than a standard td5 and its getting to be a popular engine swap with landrover owners in the UK but they cost just under £3000
