What can anyone tell me about Mk2 Golfs... weak spots to look for, ones to avoid ect? It's just that, ahem, a friend is thinking of buying one... yeah, that's it, a friend....

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

on the whole they're pretty sturdy cars,i've had 3 gti's and the only problems i had with them were sticking rear callipers and rattley lifters on start up due to a non vw oil filter.water leaks into the cabin are common but usually easily sorted and the heater fans and rheostats sometimes pack up.as discussed before ,idle valves can play up on gti's and on non gti's the carbs can ice if the intake heating system isn't working properly or some barry boy has taken some bits out.standard fit carbs are a pain in the when they go wrong, but as a rule are ok. oh and a tip,vw water pumps are cheaper than pattern ones and are miles better as you get the whole pump not just the front plate and impeller. hth ANDY

I was really keen on the Mk2 back about 5 years ago. I went and looked around at a few and also went to a garage claiming to specialise in them. To be brutally honest I was quickly put off them. I thought they were really tatty and worn out for their age and seriously overpriced. I didn't feel they ages any better than other marques.
If I was looking for one now I would only look within the owners clubs and keep my beady eyes peeled for a 'known' car. Pay the extra and get something that's been well looked after.

had a few, most i paid was £400, always been good motors, if you really wanna know one get down the scrappy and pull one apart, they just keep on going and don't really rot TBH, buy a Weber i'm into polos now cos they're a better drive IMHO, but i'm odd.

you can get a really stupidly clean GTI for a few grand. Add £200 for oak green you can get a tatty GTI for £3-400, it'll still run as nice but it'll be a bit scabby and tired. you can get a non-GTI for £1-200, and they're still an ok runaround, fairly nippy. the mechanicals don't really cause too many headaches.... carbs on carb'ed models are a bit iffy but weber replacement kit is easily available. i had a 5door 1.6 driver for a while, it was ok in a completely unexciting way. it got me where i needed to go and that was it.
