righty right. without sounding too much liike a conman. theres a toyota AE86 parked on a drive, round the corner, has done for as long as i can remember, its only when i went past it the other day i realised what it was. a 2 door hatch AE86, in proper 80's colours, met blue and sliver 2 tone. now, i creamed over it when i seen it and now i want it badly. so i am gonna go ask him if he wants to get rid of it and ill take it off his hands, save it him paying a tenner for the scrapman to collect it ;D ;D but, i don't wanna let on to how much it could possibly be worth, so how would i go about asking him in the nicest fasion, without tgelling him that the rotten car sitting on his driveway might be worth a bit more than wiegh in value

Just ask him if it could be for sale. If he wants rid he's gonna say 'might be....' and you can play it by ear from then on. Bet you're not the first to knock on his door though.
I'd be well suspicious if someone helpfully offered to 'weigh in a car for me', don't be greedy now! I bet you'd happily pay a couple of hundred quid for it wouldnt you?

As someone who regularly opens the door to blokes wanting to 'take that old motor of your hands mate', If you make him realise that your quite enthusiastic about it and your willing to pay a few quid for it you'd probably stand more chance of getting it. I'd be much happier to part with a car for nowt if i know its going to a good home and not gonna get ragged around an oval or dumped round the back of the shops. If he says he don't want to sell it say ok and leave.... Then call back a week later, then the next week, then the next. Eventually you'll catch him on the right day and he'll let you have it. Once he lets it go though, take it away pronto before he changes his mind ;D

Just apply for the V5 for it from the DVLA.
If he's too idle to do owt with the car, there may be a chance he's too idle to reply when they contact him.
Once you've got the docs, go and snaffle it off his drive. Job done.

I've done this before, you need to just be enthusiastic about the car and how you'd like to return it to it's former glory and see if he wants to sell it for a low price. The fact you are local is a good start, wouldn't even need to run to shift it.
I wouldn't say to him that you'll help him to get shut rather than scrap it, could have been his pride and joy at one time so might offend.
My Dad gets this all the time with people saying 'Do you want me to get rid of these old vans for you mate?' and referring to his collection (of probably rather valuable now) aircooled VW's! Needless to say he tells them where to go. ;D

Yeah I agree, knock him up and be enthusiastic, go on about how you love older cars, how it looks, etc. People love it when they hear nice things about their car, and happy people do nice things. After all he may actually know exactly what he has and will not appreciate you attempting to con him.

I bought a TA71 (?) Corrola like this last year, same scenario, like the others have mentioned just regsiter your interest and be interested, you are anyway. Any genuine enthusiast is hard to turn away from your door, and keep at him. You know how much it's worth, so be prepared to pay proper money for it, ie a few hundred quid at least...
We paid £100 for ours with fsh, needing a front wing and headlight. The guy was going to weigh it in, but we offered the cash anyway, he's since called up and offered us a bunch of spares that he found... ;D

right. been and had a word, and he wants a bit more than wieghing in price for it . aisan fella, quite old, i knock on the door, and was like 'hi mate, is that your car on the drive? *points to treuno* him like yeah, that is mine. me like 'would you consider selling it?' him, yeah, £700. i look at it, like, hmm, itd need a bit of work, didnt quite think youd want that much for it. him like 'yeah, they are well famous now and worth a few quid, or so ive heard' if anyone wants it then lemme know, its outta the range i was expescting to pay for it, but i spose its worth that price if you can restore it. its got a load of rot, and its the none pop up headlight model. but, its very 80's and is sitting on a set of slot mags ;D ;D

There's a rough one on UK Ebay at the moment that is bid up to a fair price. You should have a look and compare.

they are worth a bit but i hate when people take the curse word totally, like you're gonna pay £700 for that rustbucket thats about to collapse because its got a nice badge, any other 80's cars would be shifted asap! i know how that feels, i tried the exact smae thing with an old codger who had a rotten 105lux sitting in a field for like forever, said he was *restoring* it and screwed £100 out of me. it isnt worth that and it doesnt go but thats what showing that enthusiasm does for you... i still took it tho otherwise it would have continued to rot until it collapsed, and i can repair it a fair sight better than he ever could! grrrr.

I asked about buying this twice... The first time was about 2 years ago, the guy told by it was his son's, he was going to do it up ect ect... then last summer I asked again, got the same line... about 2 days later it was on ebay... went for over £100. I'd offered £50 for spares...

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.
