Right chaps, whats involved when converting a gearbox with cable clutch to hydraulic clutch? i cant visualise what needs to be done. I know off the shelf parts for type 9 conversion end up costing a fair wad.. but i don't have a type 9 in mind, think manta gearbox..which is the same as a bmw gearbox (getrag 240) so would it be possible to, just swap over the gubbins from the bmw variant, into the manta variant (bmw variant has integrated bellhousing as far as i know. not sure on the manta variant) I'm not sure if I'm being clear with what i am stating but hopefully someone will latch onto my confused ramblings. ;D

I would think you would need some sort of bracket for the cylinder and a modified release arm to take the pushrod... on the Sceptre (Carlton box, same as Manta, I think...) I went the other way and modified the pedal to take the Carlton clutch cable...

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

2 ways that spring to mind. First is if the car has a gearbox option that uses a hydraulic clutch you will need the bellhousing, slave cylinder, clutch arm and probably the release bearing as the bearing carrier will almost certainly have a different attachment to the cable one. You might be able to graft that section of the bellhousing onto the original one with a lot of patient welding. Make sure if you do it this way that the bellhousing is heated up really hot in the oven and weld while it's very hot, else the cast iron will crack. Then you will need a suitable master cylinder for the clutch pedal. Match the pedal ratio and the cylinder sizes to the original car it came from and you won't end up with a heavy clutch. Second method is to use a hydraulic release bearing which is where the hydraulic part is integral to the bearing carrier. It's usually an aftermarket thing and expect to pay £200 or more for it if one is available. This is the sort of thing: www.stockcarproducts.com/clutch4.htm

why do you want to change it ?
i assume the bellhousing would be changed to accept the clutch slave cylinder...
edit: jonny beat me to it...

the reason for all this is, I'm putting an xe into my car, and a manta 1.8 gearbox fits right up onto an xe, and the manta gearbox happens to be a getrag 240 which was fitted to the 4cylinder e30's aswell.. difference being the e30 one was hydraulic clutch realease and the manta one being cable... so its a very cheap way of keepign hydraulic-ness if i can find some way of combining the 2 gearbox's...wonder if an adaptor plate matching the manta bellhousing pattern would be a solution to just put onto the bmw box..

When I mated the Nova engine the Carlton box in the Sceptre I had to fit Carlton pilot bearing in the Nova crankshaft, and shorten the Carlton input shaft a bit... not sure if the same applies to the XE... I also had to use the Nova clutch cover with a Carlton centre plate and release bearing... I couldn't just fit the Carlton flywheel to the Nova engine as the bolt spacing was different.
Hope this saves you some head-scratching... ;D

Must be possible to lash something up with your existing slave cylinder cobbled onto the side of the bellhousing, doesnt sound too challenging. You can easy chop the clutch fork about to make it co-operate with the slave cylinder. The BMW box idea doesn't sound like much fun cos as you say these boxes have integrated bellhousings.
