Wow! You've done pretty well on the strippage front there. We were doing much the same thing to a GTi we had, at the same time just around the corner! Now my garage is full of dead GTi though. Hmmm. Looking forward to popping down again though.

I still keep meaning to ask if that backbone could be classed as a chassis so you could mod the rest of an MX5 shell. I was actually thinking the same until I removed it from the car (or removed the car from it ). It ties the gearbox to the diff with no connection to either front or rear subframe sadly. You can move the subframes back & forth quite a bit on the bushes once the body is off. The front subframe is tied on through the engine mounts and the rear one through the diff mounts. You can imagine the kind of flex you'd get through those. I suppose the best way to describe it would be as an open sided torque tube with a bit more flex and a bit less weight. Apart from the wiring, these MX5's are so nice to take apart. Everything just seems so logical and well thought out. I should be finished with the shell this morning hopefully, just bootlid, rear bumper, carpet and brake servo to go. Then it's a case of clean up, photograph everything, stack/store it in the racking and start selling it to recover my money. It's amazing how much room a car takes up when it's no longer in one piece!!

Due to feeling like poo (bloody man-flu!) I had a day off yesterday, but today I met Chris (Diabolu) at the unit where we removed the last few bits off the car (hood, rear bumper, bootlid & main carpet) After a jaunt over to an old school coach trimmers the other side of Bristol to get Chris' steering wheel dropped off for a retrim, we got back and had some lunch, drank some tea then pondered the best way to chop the shell up for weighing in. Before I knew it, a silly joke I'd made to one of the guys from next door the other day suddenly started to become a reality! Take one MX5 bare shell, one 'rolling shell' engine donor Punto, add some ratchet straps, some pushing & shoving, and a two post lift and you end up with this: Stick and A-frame on the front, hook up to a Delica and you're good to go. Towed really well....despite how it looks, the MX5 was strapped down so tightly we couldn't get it to move. At all!! The Punto actually had a lot more suspension travel than it had any right to....and it was only when we were 100% sure that it was totally safe and stable that we headed off. £140 for two bare shells....not bad. 1/2 went to the guys next door, £30 in my pocket and £40 int the kitty. It was hilarious watching the guy at the scrapyard remove the MX5 shell. A run-up with a forklift he rammed it off where it rolled away from the Punto with quite a bang. The screen frame stood up very well....gave me a lot more confidence in it. Thanks for the help Chris, it was a real laugh today. Just what A52 is all about ;D

So is this really the sort of place that I could turn up to with some beers/able hands/various car bits and perhaps return home with my car sitting a bit lower? If so, sounds too good to be true! ;D

There are no hard or fast rules but generally you get back what you put in, perhaps not directly, or on the same weekend, but I guess 'karma' definitely exists at Area52 It's kind of hard to explain, it's very easy to understand when you're there though

Yeah, as Ben says...anyone is welcome to come along and join in but you are encouraged to help out, get to know people and feed off the vibe initially. The best part of it is helping other people and getting stuck in (as well as drinking lots of beer and eating good food) As you get more acquainted with the way the place works and the people who make it so so awesome, then things can start happening to your own car. Basically once you're part of the place, then you'll kinda get it. Difficult to describe but being there it'll all make sense Have some pics from Tuesday and today: Bodyshell and drivetrain go their seperate ways The running gear is so nicely designed. The more I get to learn about MX5's the more I am amazed at how well designed and made they are. To think this set-up was designed in the late 80's! I really want to pull another one apart now, but leave the body stock and the full drivetrain in place complete with wheels Not a lot left. Just the servo and some brake pipes. That's literally it! Anger management/stress relief/expert panel beating. ;D 2 post lifts come in very useful! Chris enjoys the 'double decker' Ready for the A-frame to be attached then off to the weighbridge! Finally, Wills Eunos can be brought inside ready for a bit of wiring Poor thing is feeling a bit sorry for itself Come Monday I've got to unite this little bundle and this car, then I can put the rest of the car back together. I do like a challenge. Fingers crossed it'll be done before the weekend. In other news, some of the regulars may be shocked to see this looking like this

I meant to ring you the other day Bruce, parked next to an MR2 exactly the same, and it was the most immaculate Mk1 i've ever seen <30,000 on the clock and was literally better than showroom finish. Got chatting to the owner and he'd just paid £5.5K for it off the original owner. He did find me laid on my back looking underneath think he thought I was trying to nick it at first.
