Hi there, nice place. I would really like to see your kitchen, so if you get the chance can we have some pics?
Right, to business. It is a sad fact of any petrol heads life that the amount of space is inversely proportional to the amount of wibblepoo to go in it. In other words, you have lots of space, and 10x that in curse word. So if this workshop is tackled correctly, you can make it a pleasure or a nightmare to work in. I know which I would prefer.
I would leave the sink in place. Washing hands before going to SWMBO is always good. If you have water, you can always drop on old dishwasher, to act as parts-washer. Plus somewhere to fill the kettle up. Another obeservation. The area nearest the door, keep your finished cars or dailys there. You don't want to be moving 3 or 4 out the way, before you can pop to the shops. The area where you have your sink now, the old ramp area, I would keep that as workshop bit. Neat alcove, benches could be fitted all along that wall, and tools stored in them. Your power tools you want to store under bench? Bad plan. Every time you want a tool you have to bend over and rummage. Better plan is a metal cupboard, the sort used in offices for filing and stationary. Bolt to the wall, bolt to the floor, weld a hasp and staple on it, and all your expensive power tools are locked away, in one place, and easy to keep track of. when it comes to parts storage, I use Dexion type racking, industrial stuff. The shelves get cluttered up, and covered in dust. So my solution was to fit some doors made out of MDF, painted white. No horizontal surface left, no dust can settle. Stick your compressor on a brick or wood stand, so you can drain it. Put it up a corner out the way, and run an airline to a retractable haose reel. Standardise all fittings on air tools, to snap in connectors Does that heater warm the garage, or the house?. Plumb some rads in through the garage, with a separate pump, to circulate water. Any areas that you don't use regular, make large doors out of 3x2 and plywood, to in effect insulate them from working area. Keeps dust down, keeps heat in area you are working.
Now this all seems a bit over the top. I am lucky that in my job, I tend to find things lying about, that just have to be tidied up. Hence a radiator in my garage, off a site. MDF for dexion., off a site. Carpet tiles for floor, off a site. Big metal cupboard, I will let you guess...
Hopefully this has given you an idea into how I would tackle such a space.
Regards
Andy

Hi there, nice place. I would really like to see your kitchen, so if you get the chance can we have some pics? hey, i can post pics of the rest of the house, i'll sort them out later, it is a very interesting building with some good modifications.. i prefer the pleasure, but unfortunately it still is a bit of a nightmare at the moment.... but looking at the pictures when we moved in and compared to todays situation, i am scared.... when you have space, you keep all the rubbish.... the sink is not functional; there is no water supply there, the only use is to house some scary spiders I have a place to wash my hands in the workshop, though.... that's one reason for moving the lift; in the past is used to be that all non-runners were standing in front of the entrance, the running vehicles behind i have a metal cupboard, and it will be used for the electric tools. Also, all chargers will be there, i hate to have a battery tool and don't find the charger .... the stuff that's under the bench is virtually scrap; pieces of old furniture, srap metal etc... i think i will fit a kind of cupboard in there, to store some tools you don't need everyday..... i got a couple meters of racks from the local B&Q when they were changing the style, i just need to build them up... the reel is on #1 on the to-buy-list, but i have to wait for funds (my wife will kill me when the balance sheet from the bank comes, December was a manic tool buying month .....) well, the heater should heat the workshop, and it actually does around a circle of 1 m ;D due to the weird chimney design it heats the flat from my mother .... also it wouldn't be legal today, as the chimney is far too long for that size of heater.... at the moment it is very useful for burning all the old furniture that was in the house... it is actually not so cold in the workshop, when you are working... and i have some proper work clothes, so i don't freeze.... we changed the heating system from oil to wood though, so it would be easy to plumb in a radiator in the future. As the new living room (planned 2015 or so ;D) is above the smaller part of the workshop, we'll be needing a new chimney anyway, and then the new heating will be plumbed in. The room at the back of the workshop will be more like a museum living room, where i can keep my model cars and magazines etc..... oh, it's not over the top at all: As being responsible for the workshop in the company i can not work in that place and tell my mechanics that they should work properly... as the living room is over the workshop, we have to do something on insulation and heating very soon, as the living room will have a new purpose in spring.... there will be a new mechanic moving in there soon, that might take over my workshop in 18 years or so ;D Thanks for the useful information, while posting the reply and looking at todays pics, i had the idea , Oldbus or GTVsaviour would call it a "cunning plan" ... so here are todays pictures and i think i can't sleep tonight, i'll be thinking of tomorrows work the whole night ... stay tuned, tomorrow will be a busy day.... and here are todays pictures : parked the clio here.... yes, and a Jetta always fits... those two will be gone soon , so only temporary there ..... this is a tight fit, but i couldn't move the lift more backwards, as there would be a problem with the Type 25 at the rear ..... but it is only for a couple of weeks, so no problem then... so tomorrow will be very hard : no, it's not a dustbin, it's a long term project.... but looking at this pic brought the new plan....

I want to know what you done with the lambretta as a NSU one is quite rare! ;D, well it is still there, as i have no papers and i can't ask the previous house owner, as he might remember it ;D it sits in a very hidden place in the house, so he probably forgot about it.... and it's only the frame and the fork, everything else is missing, so sourcing all the parts for it might make it more expensive than buying a complete one...

after Andys reply yesterday i had a fantastic idea.... after putting 4 different shelves in the corner i was not really happy.... then i had the inspiration; as i once got a couple of meters shelves from a B&Q and i still had some of the stuff left, i put them up today : these white metal sheets can be put on both sides of the shelf, so that was a proper separation of that section... and i can put tools and other stuff at the back, too .... still have to finish this, but just to get an idea.... at the moment all the summer tyres are here, i could also put shelves on the right side if i wanted to.... the kitchen sink went out, instead of that the engine stand with the Passat engine moved in.... Plan is, to put all the parts for the silver Passat in, as soon as they are all painted, overhauled and finished etc....

My tidy up always looks good for a week, then I find more stuff to bring in. it's the same over here, but i will hire a big russian guy who sits in front of the garage and doesn't let me in, when i caryy things into the workshop... ;D buy the way, a local fellow Passat owner will come on saturday and check the lift (he does that for a living) , so a proper look will go over it ... last year it went 30, so i want it to be safe .....
