better yet, disconnect the speedo cable and do as many as you like. ;D A splendid plan. Only hindered by the 'russian roulette' you'd be playing against the GATSO's. And the guesswork required to keep up a regular servicing schedule. Other than that, go for it! ;D My speedo in my tina hasnt worked since 2001. I've never had one speeding ticket in it. Mind you it is bloody slow ;D

no, coz if you can do 7500, and your current milage is 50,000, but you tell 'em it 45,000, then you can do, 12,500, on a 7,500 policy, savvy dude, if you told them the millage was 45k thil will then write down that you are insured between 45k and 52500.... BUT you speedo actually reads 50k.... meaning you have only got 2500k left to do lol!!! not very cost effective in my opinion, but then again, I'm no accountant!! The real question is, what would they do if your speedo "broke" I always think my dad is getting abit of a bum deal with limited millage on his scimitar, as it has the wrong speedo drive in the gearbox so when you doing 70, it reads about 95 lol!!! meaning hes doing him self outta valuable miles! edit: bandit.... i realy should not open a thread, walk off, then reply... I'm always repeating people.

what about if you put massive wheels on? (not unlike a beach buggy!) surely that would mean the wheels spin less over the same distance, meaning the miles go up slower and you get more miles than the clock says. i beat the system!

+ try knocking it into neutral on big hills.... that way you don't need to pay for petrol either!!
i can do about half of my 7mile journey to my girl friends in neautral ( i live at the top of a hill... she lives at the bottom of the hill.)
I now know exactly where to take it out of gear, and then go off down this big wiggly hill and have to slow to about 15-20 at one point.... but it soon picks up to about 60 again and you find ure self having to brake!
(want to get the passenger to film me going up it some time.... its an amazing bit of road with hairpins and things and its all cut into the hill side.... the only thing is the pug tends to understeer abit when ure pushing it due to the heavy old 1.9td up front.... long drop if you don't catch it!!! ahh, god bless A roads)

speedo drive is normally from the gearbox output shaft (as it's related to wheel speed, not engine speed) so it still turns in neutral, so you're still racking the miles up.
i'm on a 6000 mile policy and am getting borderline so i've started using my bike for work. they did ask me when i took it out what the mileage was and whilst i've fiddled it before, i thought i'd be honest this time.
if you need to replace your speedo on a limited mileage policy, the best advice is to either 'clock' it to the real mileage, or get one that's so far out it makes it look like you've done 200,000 miles in a year, so it's obvious it's a new one and you're not out to rip them off.

my 'rocco reads spot on, i've checked it with a GPS satnav thing.... whereas the mondeo under-reads by a huge margin, speedo says 30mph and the satnav says 34mph! 70mph is 80 more or less. i try to remember that when passing speed cameras

Gordon Bennett, some shockingly half-ar$ed ideas in this thread!! Get it together people! Just buy the mileage you need ffs!
If you absolutely *must* cheat the system in some way, pop the speedo cable off for a week or two.

you could take the long way to work every day and try to rack up between 100,000 and 106,000 miles in a year, cunningly making it look like you've stuck to below 6k!

A chap I used to know asked his insurers (not sure which) about this. They said (apparently its in their small print) the vehcile is not insured if the speedo cable is disconnected. He had replaced the speedo and they wanted a photo of the old and new speedos and records of the mileage etc. They can check from MOTs what your mileage was if they want to. Buy the miles you need really. It generally doesn't make huge differences. I am with Footman James and they give unrestricted mileage to a lot of their classic policies, however they can be really difficult about accepting modifications to the cars.

Rather amusing thread all round, some interesting theories.
Fact is if you don't declare the correct mileage ie you say 55k when it's 50, you'll not get paid out when something happens at 52K... Just pay the price and be straight with them.
Having said that, in a completely hypocritical style, my Buggy has never had a gauge of any sort fitted. Just three toggle switches for lights and horn...
When I was asked for my mileage reading I told them I didn't have an odometer and they let it slide, and continued to do so for four years...
It is of course illegal, and in fourteen tugs it was only ever picked up on once. I use a sat nav system that I can read the mph from, which is far more accurate than any 36 yr old VW system that's been put together by me will ever be.
Just be honest... ;D

...my Buggy has never had a gauge of any sort fitted. . Yes it has. Except it's drawn on with felt tip. --- Anyway, have cheated insurance companies many times - rewinding odeomters, disconnecting speedo cables, lying in the first place. This was in my younger days of course. But in all honesty, for the extra £20 or whatever it costs to do an extra 3000 miles - just pay it. Save the stress and worry of getting caught out. Christ, I must be growing up or something...

Irol, Good work only the basic stuff. I wouldn't expect you'd get away so long with the lack of speedo on the buggy, but i had considered using a sat nav or snooper type thing to get the right speed. doubt id get away with not hooking up the speedo on the sierra though, but it'd save a job.

speedo drive is normally from the gearbox output shaft (as it's related to wheel speed, not engine speed) so it still turns in neutral, so you're still racking the miles up. speedo is driven from the wheel on a bug. cable goes through the hub on the passenger side front wheel.
