hi retro folks... the golf has a funny idele... like 3k at times !! makes it a little difficult to stop !! it then sometimes drops to like 500 and tries to stall... my local friendly garage agreed with what i thought, which was blocked or carbon encrusted injectors... a: is this common ? b: is it just a case of injector treatment or are there other areas to look at ? Cheers Rob

Crusted injectors....hmm, I suppose, this would make them unable to close to a certain point so fuel would keep flowing through them. Never heard of this one though! Then again, only injectors I've seen are TD5 engines (god, they're massive) and Merc V6 ones...
I'd have maybe thought it was more to do with idle control, or air mass sensor playing up?

Mine had blocked injectors, that was more of a random misfire that wouldn't clear. I had them ultrasonically cleaned and I put injector cleaner in the tank whenever I remember... Could be the ISV (idle stabilisation valve), they often clog up and cause all sorts of erratic idle problems. Remove it and squirt loads of carb cleaner in, let it soak through

Sounds like an air leak or maybe the idle control valve to me, blocked injectors sounds like an answer from someone who doesn’t really have a clue what it is.

idle valve or rubber rings around injectors perished perhaps? spray some easy start near the injectors....if the idle raises you have a leak....

Will probably be the ISV, like Darren says, give it a good clean. If it still does it, i might need replacing, but they're a fortune - so one off a scrapper may do

one of two things, usually the ISV but you can usually clean them with carb clean and if yours is digifant it could be the oil filler cap.the digifant ISV relies on crankcase pressure and if the oil cap leaks it could cause an irratic idle.dodgy injector seals normally cause misfires and loss of power.

i'll join the masses and say ISV - it had gone on my G40 and it used to idle at 2500rpm for 10-20 seconds after pulling up at the lights, meaning everyone thought i wanted to race. obviously i did, but i'm usually more subtle

any advance on ISV ? (my guy* has since been back and suggested the same!) i think you're right too... a blocked jet would be more eratic i think - it sounds like the injector is over-compensating for something... a tortured childhood maybe. how would i know, i'm drunk * my mechanic guy not my guy !!

I had a similar problem with my mk1 golf gti 8v, it was sorted by getting the two mixture screws adjusted. My co2 levels were seriously out, but now she purrs like a kitten!
