Does the blown capacitor have a number printed on it floower by an F or UF? That number would be handy - it gives the size of the capacitor and while the RIFA PME271M bit tells you the type of capacitor it doesn't give anything away about the size of the capacitor.
Assuming that the capacitor was just across the two mains wires (or maybe the motor terminals) then the one posted should be ok.

Yes, it was across the main power leads.
I upload some pics now of the capacitor.

0.22 uF then although, like jrevillug says the .47 uF you posted would also be fine Nice sewing machine.. I like old singers, but ours is a bit older, and doesn't have any capacitors (or electricity) I'll grab a pic, it's out cos I've been running some curtains up for Mrs S here you go, 1936 singer treadle. One choice of stitch (straight), forwards only, but uses no electric and can sew through pretty much anything! I found it in a skip

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Lol, wasn't exactly free.. It was almost 20 years ago, I didn't have a car, walked past the skip it was in on my way home from the pub. Decided on the spot it was worth dragging it 5 miles across newcastle ;D

My mum's got a very similar Singer to that. Had it as long as I can remember. Been in the loft for yonks now! Scaryoldcortina!!! I had one of those about 15 years ago! Like yourself, I also pulled it out of a skip at the local recycling place. Turns out a guy came round with loads of stuff like that and dumped it!! He was clearing out his old dear's house. Apparently, there was a smaller one too but that was quickly snapped up along with loads of 1940's/50's furniture and bric a brac. Wish I'd gone down a lot earlier that day! At least it all didn't get crushed up and went to some use. Maybe there should be a thread dedicated to 'Wombling' or 'skip-diving' with a 'Skip Find of the Year' award?

Not singer, but is sewing machine related! My mum's maiden name is warwick and has found out that farrr down her family tree a member of the family is the founder of warwick sewing machines, so a long shot but if anybody has any pics of even an actual machine please PM me

My dad had pulled a few old Singer sewing machines out of the dump. Eventually sold them to a person that was going to use the desks. Years later I was in a pub in town that had singer desks as the tables. Wonder if it was Dads ones?
