Theres a P plate VW Caddy van for sale near me, going for pittance, its seen some abuse but all in all its a grand little thing for chips and gravy cash. My thought though as I have never owned a VW is this Its a 1.9 diseasel...........any good/problems? Cheapish to run/maintain/work on/modify? AND How can you get a builders hack to look from this To something like this? Are they easy enough to hit with the stick? Wheel availability I should imagine would be like finding grass in a field but adapter plates? Are there any interesting choices? A few more pics for you Many thanks in advance and the cheese and wine's round the back

the nimbus grey one was built by big Ron Huyzer/Huizer in Holland, runs a TDI motor and had a lot of stuff done to it. He panelled in the side windows on his and runs a modified Phaeton badge on the back reading "Phat One". I think he even changed the dash too amon many other things. It was featured in PVW

Rear lowering is done by flipping and modifying the rear axle, and then lowering blocks depending on how low you want to go. Front is lowered using Polo 6N lowering springs or coilovers. Most seem to have avoided the usual VW scene tax (unlike the mk1 caddy), and as you've found, decentish examples can be found for not much money. I don't know a lot about the 1.9 n/a diesel in them apart from the fact they are pretty slow, but frugal. I think these were available with turbo diesel lumps, which makes them fair bit quicker and more tunable. www.vwcaddyforum.com is a good place to look for tech help and parts etc.

My old one. As previously said axle flip on rear , easy 6" drop. Front is basically mk3 Golf so world is your oyster with coilovers , mk2 coilovers do fit but missing a bracket for brake hose. Seat Ibiza of a similar age can supply you interior trim parts and electric windows. Body wise most are just smoothed out and colour coded in normal Euro style , I extended the bonnet on mine for an eyebrow, fitted sprinter wing vents and fitted an Ibiza Spoiler on the bumper. Superb little van , had 190,000 miles on it and was still great. I do miss it , especially considering I know its sitting in a lock up with no engine.

They use a the VW 1.9d on a skoda gearbox, 5th gear is weak, and they are pretty steady going, but they arent too bad to drive, I found the brakes appauling!! Wheels are the usual 4x100, ebay coilovers and i assume flipping the axle for the rear, all available at the chop 'n' drop ;D I've still got the old BBS off theslag(tm) that would sit nice on it for cheapness

The trucks are Skoda based , vans are seat ibiza , vw polo estate based and use golf boxes. Brakes were always ok on mine . (early mk1 caddy was nasty though)

Have a wander over to www.vwcaddyforum.com for all you could ever want to know. There's a whole section of the site devoted to the mkII caddy. With regards to lowering the rear - a lot of the guys seem to use lowering plates which bolt the hub to the axle tube at a higher level (therefore lowering the ride height) these also increase the track width too. Have a scroll through the mkII van section and you'll find a few pictures, so you can see what I'm on about. Joe

1.9 oil burner's nay to bad as it goes, obviously not the fastest horse in the stable but pulls well when you have a head of steam. Did wonder weather I should have got a turbo one at first but the above and it's basic nature, reliability and timid juice sipping win it for me. Just slam it then you not need to back off too much on the twisty's

Yeah, get over to caddy forum lol;D That is the changeover year from the inderect to direct injection engine. Both are 64hp (woo), the early 1Y engine is easier to maintain as its a basic ole diesel, the slightly later SDI is DBW and ECU controlled, a little more tempremental and harder to diagnose faults but its still a solid engine, and slightly better on fuel. Here's my VR6

Cheers for all the help fellas! Ive signed up to caddyforums, cracking place, really helpful. The 1.9 diesel will be perfect for me really as I shoot about all over the country with work so frugality is quite desirable. Off to take a gander and have a wee drive tomorrow ;D
Plus one further thing, I take it that when you've slammed these wee beasties, the loading space becomes quite superfluous right? I mean like a mixer and some bags of cement in the back would be a no no lol

Used to load mine up all the time. Only ever rubbed tyre on top of wheel arch tub. Engines and gearboxes were a regular load.
