Now that Saab have been saved, I feel reassured that parts availabilty won't be a problem in the future... I have been looking at something fast, FWD and Fiat Croma shaped to replace my BMW, but what is a 9000 2.3 turbo like to live with? I was slightly shocked by the group 17 insurance (compared to group 12 for mine) and I suspect a 225bhp 2.3 is not going to do 45mpg on a run. Should I leave well alone? If not does anybody want to swap one for my car? 'The long run' 9000 Looking a bit moody

I know nothing about the 9000, but can heartily recommend the Volvo 850 T5 if it fits the bill...

I've had two 9000's - a CD (saloon) and CS (hatch).
I prefer the hatch for it's ability to swallow lots of stuff. However, I strongly recommend the 2.3 turbo versions of either. My mpg averaged about 23 though - if you're expecting 45mpg, a 9000 isn't for you since they're a big, heavy car.
Comfort is brilliant - I've done 500 miles in a day in mine without any issues, whereas I can't in my 9-3 and the Zafira causes a pain in the bum (and the back!).
Insurance groups and mpg is the only downside - parts are usually fairly reasonable and there is likely to be a decently priced specialist near you.
I'd still have mine if we had the space. And I'll probably buy an Abbott Racing tuned one in the future and hide it from SWMBO.

Hey, I was looking at an abbott racing one not so long ago (in chipping norton i think). Thanks for the advice, I feel sad that it only averages 23mpg, my car seems to average 35mpg but on a run it will do 45mpg. I suppose I drive 40 miles a day, so it wouldn't be THAT bad. I want more power, I'm bored with the 318ti even if it is rwd.

or if you don't have the saab.fiat.lancia you could allways opt for the alfa 164 version

I had a 9000 16V - solid, but slow and rolly-polly. And 28 MPG.
I had a 9000 Griffin 2.3 Turbo. Quicker, much quicker than the 2.0 16v but heavier on petrol than my current Lexus LS400, and about the same as my previous LS400 did. I think I sold it with the average MPG computer telling me 24.4 MPG
They look great, IMO, but not great to drive. far too much effort to stop the front wheels spinning even with traction control on it. Too stereotypically FWD for my tastes.
Built to withstand a nuclear attack though. Some bits of the interior switchgear feel very plasticky though.
I don't think Saab being saved will make any difference to future parts supply for these.
Try one, if you love it, convert it to LPG.

I love Saab 9000's. My dad had a couple years ago, one being a 2.3 turbo S. Was nice and fast, did 30mpg but they don't handle that great.
I like the older ones, not keen on the CS shape

Hi, I'm new to this site, so not sure if I should do an an intro before posting?
But just to say that I'm on my 4th 9000 cs, an N reg FPT 2.3.
They can be pricey on genuine spares and don't handle as well as a BMW (I had a 325 sport 10 years ago) as a comparison.
But they are excellent workhorses, can get a 8x4 sheet of ply in boot, should you want to!
Mine does around 30 mpg, seems to be unbreakable, but quite a few specialist breakers around should you need parts, nice interiors albeit a little plasticity, as mentioned before, and often come with leather.
there seems to be large scope for improving performance, loads of ideas to look at on the uksaabs site .
So I would say go for it.
PS brought mine at auction for £400, so you could get a cheap one to try out, with out the risk of losing loads.
Gav.

There's an LPG 9-3 for sale near me, but it looks like a 9000 if that makes sense, not a 900. Didn't know that the 9000 body style was used on 9-3s. An lpg 9000 would be lovely, but you are right, I need to drive one first.
ps. I was only joking about the parts supply... ;D
On another note, some info on 'the long run', looks like they were reliable then...
"With members of the automotive press participating in the driving, Saab set 12 international or world speed records at Talladega. One 9000 Turbo averaged more than 132 mph (210 km/h) while rolling up 100,000 kilometers (60,000 miles), roughly the equivalent of three trips around the world. With all three cars finishing in fine running condition, the 9000 demonstrated the stamina and staying power of a true Saab."

I'd agree that you should look at UKSaabs.co.uk - then buy a nice one. If you don't like it, sell it to me at a discount

I've had a few of these - Agreed they are a bit lumbery and uneconomical 'round town but on an open road 50-70 mph in 3rd is a blink!

If you like Saabs get a classic 900 turbo aero much much more fun and more interesting than a 9000...
The 9000's never feel quick unlike the c900's plus the 9000's chassis is pretty woeful whereas the sporty 900's feel much more lively composed, probably because the engines the right way round!
I've never had a Saab turbo of any shape manage more than 30mpg ever even the N/A ones only get 32-33mpg on a slow steady run....
I'd not bother having another 9000 been disappointed buy them all whereas 900's i luuuuuuuuurve..
