OK, sort of retro as this is out of an old cooker... But who knows better than retro riders about odd old alloy parts... I need to get the (teflon I think) coating off this aluminium part. Its out of an old Ramoska cooker, I'm getting retro socialist in the kitchen. But surely same process as removing powder coat or whatever from alloy parts on a retro car... tips? tricks? what media to use if I blast it, what chemical to use to strip it otherwise? Ta.

I got a 10yr old one thats losing the finish, after reading your thread i have just tried cellulose thinners on a worn out pan scrubber and the finish comes off easily so i guess a good paint remover would fix it. now i gotta do mine darn it

Thanks I'll try that. I'm assuming its OK to leave the finish "natural". A mate suggested using some high temperature paint on it (like VHT or something) but I'm not sure I want that next to my food...

I'll be leaving mine natural, we always use to cook in aluminum pans so can't hurt you. if you vht it it'll stink for ever i reckon. polish it up for heat reflection and faster raw to cooked times ;D ;D ;D

well.....
There are a few options, but blasting it with sand or anything like that might pose a problem.
If the ali is very soft, it can work harden and crack when blasted, or distort badly.
If you do blast it use ali oxide blasting media at about 40 - 50 psi. I doubt however that that pressure and soft ali oxide media will do much to shift the coating however.
Is it definately teflon or is it anodised?
If its definately coated with teflon or similar, nitromores and similar will be the way to go.
I have tried to re-finish solft ally parts, and it usually ends up damaging the part.

cheers. the damaged area I can scrape off with my thumb nail so its not anodised.
the ali bit won't really come in contact with the food, I guess its just Teflon'd there so if it gets splashed it wipes clean easy.
