Right, the van went , but not to me, thanks for the replies.Hi,
I have just fallen into the line for a Freecycle 1999 diesel Renault Kangoo van.
Ad reads like this:
1999 Renault Kangoo Van, MOT until 25/6/10
No Tax
It came from freecycle a couple of years ago, and was put back on the road. Has been my daily hack (to and from Ebbsfleet) for the last 6 months.
It was a builders van, so is boarded out inside.
The alternator belt let go, and jammed into the cambelt - could be an easy fix, but I just can't manage it right now.
It will have to be towed away.
Would this be an easy fix, or would it be better to find another engine etc ?
The ad is a bit cryptic, but hey if it is free, and can be used about the place till Tom is 17 , then maybe worth a few quid invested.
Recommendations please.

Does that make it a Kantgoo? Sorry, I'll get my coat. I can't see how the alternator belt jammed into the cambelt - surely there's a timing cover in between? I dare say you can't go wrong if it's free, even if you have to source another engine.

I'd say go for it if it's free. Not overly keen personally as ours has cost us well over 2k in repairs after the engine gave up on life last year. ours is an '03 model so it might just be later build qualit or something

If the aux belt snaps or comes off, its possible for it to get sucked down the gap behind the bottom pulley and into the area behind the timing belt cover, usually jamming the belt. If it were me, I would hoik the head off and see whats what - if there is no piston damage and the engine appears otherwise sound, I would source a complete used head - get it checked/skimmed and stick it on. If there is the slightest doubt about damage to the pistons or perhaps damage to the big ends from the pistons suddenly encountering more resistance on their stroke, then I would see if i could find a complete running engine to swap in.

Thanks Dave, oh and BenzBoy, sounds like good advice. Diesel vs Petrol, is it worth considering an engine swap to petrol, or just stick to a diesel and keep it simple.

I would keep it simple and swap in like-for-like. I'll bet there are differences in electronics that will become a real pain without a whole donor vehicle sat next to it.

^^^yeah, Electronics would need work to run a different engine, as may other stuff like fuel tank and perhaps fuel lines. I would definately keep it like-for-like.

And when you're sourcing the engine (possibly) they are almost entirely a Clio in mechanical terms. And old Clios are cheaper than old Kangoos. Personally I'd avoid it. I found my work one to be quite literally dangerous to drive.
