Hi guys,I need some help with a diesel engine, its from a Volvo 940. So its the 2.4TD Audi/VW lt van engine. I am working on the head and have taken it apart, done the valve guides, laped the valves, put the new oil seals on the valve guides and have put all the valves back together. The problem how do I adjust the tappets on them? I mean all apart from one valve are sealing. I can't find any information on the valve clearance, it all says its hydraulic :S here have a picture for your trouble ;D thanks gobs

need to know the above...
But either: one valve isn't lapped properly one valve is bent and not closing properly (you'll never lap it) one lifter is stuck there's a wrong component somewhere - valve too long etc
have you had the valve seats cut?

don't know about volvo/vw hydraulic tappets but in the old days of doing vauxhalls and stuff if you released the pressure on them they would open up and get bigger.. thus holding the valves OPEN.. with the vauxhaull ones you could unseat the valve in them with a pointed tool and close them back up, then run engine and they would refill and re-adjust themselves..
do some googling.. somewhere will have the details on how to reset the hydraulic tappets correctly... (how to drain them down)

did you squeze the oil out of the lifters before putting it back together. if not there jacked up causing the valves not to seat if it was my car i would put a rope on and tow it down the road it will start once the oils been squezed out abit. and towing it wont cause any damage your valves arnt open enough [ I'm sure they'll be a smart coment along shortly]

thanks guys, ;D i have not bolted the engine back together I just bolted the cam and spun it by hand just to check all's well but, then i realised this one valve all valves are lapped properly. all valves seal when there is no cam/tappets. no bent valves. all the valves closed/sealed apart from X. I then unbolted the cam off and swap the tappet bucket of X that was not sealing, with the one of valve Y that I knew is/was sealed. which seems to d the trick, however now all valves apart from Y are sealing :S I did not empty any of the lifters (don't know how to) but tried pushing it down as I can push down a few of the others, but it seems to be jammed. if any one knows this will be grateful, but i will also goggle around to see if anything comes up. thanks for your time Gobs
