it varies. Most are standard but heavily uprated bug or bus boxes. Companies like Rancho build heavily uprated boxes to the same dimensions are beetle boxes. Drag cars sometimes use mendeola's which are pretty much bullet proof ... but they are enormous in size. Another common one can be porsche 901 or 915 boxes. As you can see, there are quite a few different routes people go down ...

surely an adaptor plate can be made though. There are many RX-8's with big power already though, why not look to the 'box that they typically use? Any reason why you were looking for a vw box?

VW box, because they are rear engined and the power goes to the rear wheels...
was trying to think of any 200bhp+ rear engined cars....other than a 911...

The Renault UN1 box is good for 250bhp but can get expensive if you want to put more through it. But they are getting a bit thin on the ground now.
If you expect over 250 then (I understand) There is an Audi/VAG box that can be used.

AA, what kind of gearbox does a Renault 21/Espace turbo diesel have. I know it’s a transaxle, is it a UN1?
I ask cos I have one of these in my cellar.

MrB, I don't think it is. I'll try to check my info this evening but IIRC it's from the R25 V6 (& V6 Turbo), R21 Turbo Alpines and something else (V6 Espace maybe), as well as Alpine GTAs and Lotus Esprits.

OK, I checked with a friend who confirmed 'R21 Turbo, Alpine, 25 Turbo, 25 GTX 2.2 and Renault Master used the UN1. Renault Master final drive is too low for road car use though..
The other models of 25 used the NG3, which looks similar, but much weaker and completely different.' Cheers

I did a little bit of reserch when i was looking at putting one in a mini pickup, basicly the 21 turbo box is the one to have, best ratios apparently. Used alot in GT40 replicas too.

You can make a mid mounted setup with a FWD gearbox but you cant rear mount the engine as it would be running in reverse unless you flip the box/diff or run a Honda engine

Some non transverse engined FWD cars already have the box ahead of the engine.
