i'm after sticking some slightly stretched rubber on the benz wheels ive collected. I don't want anything silly as the car is used regularly and i want to make sure it stays safe. The wheels are 16.7.5j, so 16x8.5inches. What would you recommend? 8.5 inches is about 215mm, would 205's be sensible or would they not even appear stretched.
Rmad, i seem to remember you having some sensibly stretched rubber, how did you choose the size??

195's or 205's should be the go, lowest profile you can get them in. Also the stretch look relies greatly on the sidewall design.

195's will give a bit of 'stretch'. I run 195's on the front of my bimmer and 205 at the rear on 7.5J rims

My brother runs 205/55's on the 7.5" Rays Engineering alloys on his R32 Skyline and there's absolutely no stretch look at all.

I have 195's on my 7J rims: Not a huge stretch but trying to explain why i wanted a narrower tyre to the apes in the tyre place was..... hard going It looks like a slight stretch. Like Rmad said though, its how the sidewall looks that can play a big role in the overall appearence.

That's a 40-profile on a 17in rim.
