Hi Guys, I know some of you are into technology and i was really hoping one of you could give me a hand, basically I have been using a b&q maglight copy torch for way too long and ive now damaged the glass (plastic) at the front to a point that it hardly works, i was really hoping to get a new LED type torch (perhaps one that doesnt take D batteries like my current one too?!) I have around £30 to spend, and would like something really bright, preferably hand held and of a similar construction to a maglight, as it needs to fit in my backpack. Have a really cool old bmx for your troubles! ;D

I will never ever buy an LED Maglite again!
Great beam on it, nice & bright but my god does it flicker/cut out!
You know those scenes in the movies where the torch gives out right at the 'wrong' moment and the guy/girl stands there shaking the torch just before they get attacked/eaten/shot....well they do that for real. All the time. It's not funny.
I have yet to get attacked/eaten/shot but I can never seem to get the torch to stay on and spend more time shaking it than pointing it at what I need to be seeing!
I also have an Energiser head torch thing...cost about £15 and it is AWESOME! You can angle the beam and it is really bright. Like Rottie, I also use it for dog walking, but it comes in SOOO handy for illuminating dark areas when I am working (on cars, under sinks, in lofts etc...)
Modern LED technology is great and I'd say you can't go far wrong with anything EXCEPT a Maglite.

Thanks very much for the input, i will research more into it, and a headtorch would also come in useful!
Thanks a lot!

Maglites are curse word. They suck in their own Niche.
Maglite LED copies are great. When I was at Halfords we spent much time opening the packets and choosing torches. We went with two H-branded maglite lookalikes with 5x LEDS, and an energiser head-torch that I really miss now ( mine is cheaper and crapper).

I have a lenser P7. Very good but eats batteries (aaa) would rather they had made the torch slightly bigger and took AAs.

Tesco are doing some cheap maglite copys, LED but they do suffer from flicker i had to take 4 back till i got one that was perfect. Strangly enough i was gonna say get a maglite Had mine 15 years and just upgraded it to LED, it's great ;D big but great (6 cell) it's only ever had one new switch and that was posted FREE from the company to me not bad concidering i'd owned it 12 years by that point How much you looking at spending? the teco ones were £8 for the 2AA and £15 for the 2D cell one.

I got DeWalt LED spot/flood and it is absolutely awsome for the price. It can honestly light up a quarter mile away, and it can hilariously blind my wife when she is not expecting it ;D

I've just been out and spunked £30 on a Petzl Tikka 2, was getting geared up to adapt my Energizer 6 LED to take a single 1W LED but the dog chewed it the other day There's a lot about on E-Bay but not sure about quality so best to go on a direct recommendation. Just a question though, why not a headtorch? Apart from if the need arises the thrash someone with said torch

2nd the tescos torches, I've got the same two and for the money (and the fact that you get them in a shop not over t'net from china) I don't think they can be beat - the aa one even survived being dropped in a drain pan full of warm antifreeze! B&Q had some of the energiser headtorches for under a tenner the other day, they are awesome as well.
edit: I must have lucked out on the tesco torches though - both of mine are perfect.

I just spent £50 on a Fenix L2D and Twofish Lockblock after recommendations on another forum: REALLY bright compared to any bike light at that price and very good quality but at £50 it's not a budget option. It does light up the whole road though www.fenixtorch.co.uk/led_torches/fenix_l2d_q5.htmlTook these shining into the garage. Nothing scientific, just all taken at the same F5.6@1/8 ISO1600 camera setting in daytime. First shot is from a 4xAA Energizer Duo torch like this one, that I take camping: Then the L2D on low, mid, high and turbo mode: Tomsk on OcUK did some as well: forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=10067495&postcount=46

I'm suprised youre all having trouble with maglites- i bought one about sept/oct itme ready for the winter, 4 cell LED cos they were on special at screwfix, and not had a single flickering problem- even using it as a hammer as invariably always happens!! i ran a set of 3 quid tesco batterys through it, then got these, which are brilliant- www.battery-force.co.uk/detail_URBATT002C-Uniross-RA104589-AA-to-D-Convertor-Pack-of-2.htmlD cell size adapter that lets you run double As in a mag. then you can stick em in a small plug mount charger. the batteries you get with em if you buy em as a set are 2100mAh too.

Aha! Mine is the smaller Maglite with 3 x AA's. Had nothing but probs with it. I gues the D cell ones are their bread & butter and they can't afford to get those ones wrong. Just a bit too bulky for my needs. I'll just keep soldiering on with my Energiser headtorch.

I used to sell maglights and never had one returned. Currently running 2 x 6 Dcell ones 1 with after market LED bulb, 1 x 5 Dcell LED and a couple of AA pen lights, no grief Also have a random AA LED alloy barreled torch but no idea where from, good though Also did have a maglight copy, 3 D cell thing that was junk.. Head torches are a pain, just can't get on with them

I`ve had a mini maglight for years with no problems. Only problem now is I don`t know where I`ve left it. I find some of those cheap led`s from Pundland etc. are great for your key ring and are quite bright in really dark situations. I remember using one years ago to give my location to a helicopter !
