my 08 focus is fine in the snow, but i remember having more fun in my tiny little suzuki playing in the snow last year..
in the end it's all down to the right tyres and driving skills.. I had the luck to have studied in Sweden for half a year (daily snow and ice issues). And I lived near an abandoned military airport so had enough practise back then.

My old 5 series is a bit poor in the snow, but mainly because I've put really wide wheels on it I'm sure it would be better with narrow wheels and the correct winter tyres. I was thinking my modern Xsara VTS was coping really well untill the other day where it just stopped in a blizzard and wouldn't restart. Oddly all it needed to get it running again were a load of faut codes cleared an the ECU and it hasn't logged a single fault since. The kit car is by far the best in the snow, I suspect FWD combiled with light weight and no ABS or other electronc aids are the reason, that and I didnt go too silly with the width of the tyres.

Oddly all it needed to get it running again were a load of faut codes cleared an the ECU and it hasn't logged a single fault since. I've experienced and heard of a few weird sensor issues during this winter. I think it's just because it has been unusually cold. Although not according to my Astra which now claims it's constantly 28 degrees Celsius everywhere.

It would actually be better if we got a long run of wintry conditions that we could adapt too. adapt 90% of modern drivers can't or would be to lazy to . they would rather just crash in their super safe machine because the manufacturers have told them they will be fine because its a new car and it does everything for them . how about just driving properly and not crashing car safety wouldn't be an issue then would it ;D

^^^ this doesn't happen in Sweden, Norway, North Dakota, Canada, etc.
People do what they are used to. We are not used to snow here so we balls it up.
"modern people" (nor indeed specifically British people) are not so intrinsically stupid they would continue to just slide into stuff if we had 3 month long snow filled winters every year. We'd deal with it.

Bluebirds been find in't snow, even the deeper stuff we had I've been chucking it around farm tracks where theres deep ruts and a almost a foot of snow (So thats almost a foot on top of the tracks whilst the wheels were lower in the ruts resulting in the lower air intake being full of snow).
Did it fail? Did it hell! I swear I got a wheel off the ground going over some of those bumps, and I even drove it into the middle of a field, where it got a little bit stuck, but gentle rocking got it back out (well, jamming from 1st to Reverse)
And people laugh at me for having a 21 year old car that will "Fail"
Pfft!
(If anyone was wondering, I was out taking pretty snowy scenery pics)

To summarise my thoughts and to boringly sound like my old driving instructor, providing you drive in a manner that is suitable for the conditions you should be ok. I have a fair few car mad friends with everything from Imprezas and Aston V8's to stripped out Saxos and R5 Turbos. Out of all of them, the only one who scares me in a car is the fella with the 1.4 Clio who stamps on the pedals like they are all on and off switches with no in between and who drives in exactly the same way in rain, sun, snow and any other weather you might care to mention. A little bit of savvy goes a long way.
Oooo - just to add, in the last few weeks I have been driving my dads Merc 190E auto and then my Golf MK4 GTI 1.8T. Neither has made me think "ooo, that other car sucks balls" so moderns all curse word in the snow = no.

Porsche 924 - gone Citroen Saxo VTR - not very retro but I loved it - now gone... MK4 Golf GTi 1.8T - gone but hardly remembered... Mini Cooper S R53 - gone BMW 125d Coupe - gone (mostly sideways)
Ford Focus RS Mk1 - hello low MPGs and "wanna race me" at every set of lights... 1973 BMW 2002 - Twin 40's, 284 Cam, Revolutions, E21 Recaros + more Porsche Cayman 987 3.4S - here and due to cost me more money than I have

Well, neither of mine are modern as such, neither retro.
But it's been split, The Sierra is good, infact when i've wanted a little sideways play, i've been denyed! Nankang rubber with a pretty square blocky tread pattern? Low power? Going too snow? Who knows. Understear hasn't happened either. However the slope leading to the MOT was a BIG issue.
The (1996) civic has been a little more un-redictable, almost got stuck in my own carpark yesterday, (rather wide and low profile tyres for the size of the car imo) rocking back and forth got it out. But the same slope at the mot station when dropping the sierra off, wasnt an issue at all.
As for the lorry, the volvo's fail epicly cause the traction control says "Stooooooopid human" when u try and turn it off and turns ITS SELF back on as soon as u start spinning up cutting the power down to nil. Where as the DAF's are just stupid and don't have Traction control! lol However generally they have bitten really well, ABS hasnt been an issue cause other than trying to, they take a bit of effort to get em to lock.
Comes down to a lot of things, no one here really knows how each other drives. U might get one bloke say "ah my modern has been brilliant" cause he's planned ahead, took it steady and used some noggin ya might get another chap say "my retro's been curse word, i fell off the road into a ditch" cause the bend in question was taken at 50mph! lol

Another clip of summer vs winter tyres. I know that the 1 series is useless in the snow so they must work:

Good test..... they stuck a girl in the BMW.... That's increasingly BMW's target demographic: hausfraus. So, it's part of a focus group clinic more so than a test. ;D

My 3 series has been surprisingly ok, I live on a farm, which has about 3 hills to contend with before you even get out of the drive (onto another hill!), so I was skeptical at first. a half hundredweight in the boot along with a large bag of gravel and it is actualy fun to drive! Getting up the hill it just keeps going as long as you are in second with traction control on, it slips, grips, slips gripts etc. But it always rolls up eventually. Dabbing the throttle in most gears round a corner gives you an amazingly controllable little drift. ps. Its got pirelli p6000s on.
