Having thought that the diff mount was kerfuzzled in my E28 BMW, I spent a day underneath it swapping over the gearbox, diff, driveshafts, shifter... Well everything apart from the engine and rear hubs really, it all needed attention. Turns out one of the problems was my gearbox mounts, as you can just about make out they've both sheared in half. They had the consistency of liquorice, and although I considered replacing them with some of Mr Bassetts finest, I've gone for some new ones of the same spec. But this bothers me, as these were obviously not up to the job asked of them and in keeping with the modification theory of break it and build it stronger, I was wondering if anybody could suggest somewhere that you can get hardened bushes made to a one-off design, or small batch (10 pairs?)? Or whether anybody else had experience of using another sort of bush? Small engine mount, truck bumpstop, Aunt Mauds sponge surprise etc... Any thoughts? As an amusing aside, when put back together... The gearbox front seal decided it wasn't up to the job of holding tight, so a new seal is wending it's way over from Germany, oh how we laughed.

I would contact Deflex they make polybushes but they also make a lot of other polymer bits and are happy (or used to be) to make one offs or adapt bits. don't have the web address at hand but can probably find it if you want it. There quality seems to be the same as superflex but cheaper and I have never had a problem with them.

I would replace the engine mounts as well. Have you checked the part numbers of the 528i mounts and the M5 Mounts ? for both engine and box ? They may well be an upgraded Mount The reason for all failing is usually one mount goes, then the other 3 become overloaded and fail pretty soon after, if you replace all of them the difference will be significant ;D Poly engine bushes will transmit a lot more NVH into the shell, and you may or may not like that ;o) Vibratechnics are another source, they do upgraded Bushes for all sorts of stuff, including Mk2 golfs with VR6 motors ;D HTH Dom

Having spent another day under it today, I can quite honestly say I feel like breaking it and fitting the running gear in something else. Unfortunately the M5 stuff isn't up to much more than the standard, it's got the box mounts and the engine mounts, it's only the diff mount which err, differs, so we can't use that as it's the bodyshell side of things which needs changing. I'm not overly bothered with vibration being passed through the shell, I used to have a Grp N 106 as a daily driver with a solid mounted transmission, so I have some experience of what it'll be like. Looking at my options, the gearbox mounts are very simple items, and the BMW is pretty agricultural so I can remake the crossmember to suit other bushes... But I'm going to follow up those leads, so thanks for that. I'm figuring a small batch run of bushes may well be a winner, as if I'm having this trouble... There must be others. ;D

If your not worried about the NVH issues, then find a freindly machinist and make some Nylon ones up for the box
