Was reading about Das Reich's (22nd panzer division) movements after D-Day and what the allies did to stop or slow them down. I kept coming across the resistance using Gazogenes so I did a bit of digging and discovered i cant speak french! most of the stuff written about these engines is in that language but what I have found is that these were normal engines with a carb mod that got them running on methane produced by burning wood or coal, the vehicles had large burners atatched but werent the most eficient things ever.... anyway, being a curious kind of person I wondered if anyone here has had a play with these things or anything similar? or can anyone enlighten me as to what mods an engine needs for this..... think along the lines of a wood burning generator..... heat and power? Heres one of the beasties....

Never heard of 'em but suspect it is something along the lines of the wartime conversions done over here to commercials where an enormous bag made of waxed canvas or similar was fixed to the roof and coal gas was stored inside to be burned by the engine. Methane is a naturally formed gas similar to propane and butane so is likely the mods to the carb were as you would do for a singlepoint lpg conversion.

BOOOM!
If you do start playing, watch out for the Carbon Monoxide - along with Hydrogen it's one of the main constituents of the producer gas, and is really rather deadly.
Oh, and this stuff burns best at an approx 1:1 ratio with air, and the generator works under engine vacuum, so LPG kit won't work. It's at it's best in a large capacity, high-compression, mild-cammed, long stroke, slow revving engine (it has a high octane, and burns slowly - 2000 rpm for max efficiency, and 3000 rpm max type slow).

There was an episode of "planet mechanics" or something (had Dick Strawbridge in it) where they converted a pickup to wood gas. was very interesting, but quite cumbersome!

I'd rather walk and observe the mushroom cloud Transit from a distance.

I used to work with Jem, he's a top bloke! Look up 'pyrolysis', that's the correct term for gasification of waste. You can feed it pretty much anything combustible, doesn't have to be wood.

But.......... I *thought* CO2 was the big "new" anti-enviromental poison. If burning twigs, chips, and coal is now the new "green", can someone explain the dichotomy?

Combustible waste put in landfill biodegrades into methane which eventually breaks down into CO2. Why landfill it when you can stick it in a big vat, collect the methane and get some energy back? It's the justification behind municipal waste incineration for combined heat and power, plus as an added bonus you reduce the volume of material going to landfill.

They've closed or are in the process of closing all the muni incinerators in NA. The EPA here is just about to issue a rule declaring CO2 as a pollutant gas, John. When that happens, I guess exhaling will be a taxable event!

It's the justification behind municipal waste incineration for combined heat and power, plus as an added bonus you reduce the volume of material going to landfill. Also, it's crucially important that plant-based material is renewable, whereas oil/coal is not. If the human race had never discovered coal or oil, then the atmosphere would still be more or less fine, as you can burn as many trees as you like, provided that you let them re-grow. The only problem with this is that each person's car would require a moderate-sized forest to be sustainably powered, and hence only one in every few thousand people could afford the wood to power their car and the rest of us would be riding bicycles made from bamboo or somesuch.

When that happens, I guess exhaling will be a taxable event! If it uses the waste to make electricity are you sure it's not because of dioxin (SOx, NOx) or particulate reasons? That's normally what people complain about with CHP plants.

We had a power-out at the workshop today so I got a small paint can, some pipe and a blowlamp, got to say it works alot better than expected.... and I still have my eyebrows!
That volvo looks really well made, I would love to see folks faces as you go through the town in that.... very steampunk!
