Bah. Just when I though all the hard stuff was over I went at the rear arch with the grinder to find out how much grot was in it. There was a little bit of bubbling but nothing too serious looking. That was because most of the arch wasn't made of metal but had been sculpted from a solid piece of filler. Hats off to the person who did it, that was some seriously clever filler skills, but the rest of the metal remaining has just dissolved.
So it looks like I'm going to have to spend some money on it after all. I can't make a new arch and rear quarter panel in my Workmate so I reckon the best way to do this is to use the new pressing as a template and build the back part up to match. I'll get some pics as it's quite impressive rot. Wanted: passenger side rear quarter repair panel for 105E Anglia. Spread the word.
On a lighter note I have the roof sanded ready for paint, the only hitch is where I once had a stupid drunken punch up with my brother the roof got punched (don't ask) and there is a dent!

Rust, one of the few drawbacks of Retro Motoring... Filler Artists are another, done it myself, bought things that look mint only to find its made of fibreglass and filler...

One of my Beetles has a skim of about an inch of filler over the whole lot. I thought it looked a bit odd-shaped in places. Needless to say, I'm using it for parts now.

that sucks... my whole car is made from filler.... well, fiberglass... but the pervios owner had done some very DIY repairs lol.
Once we sold a fiestawith rust aroud the fuel filler cap, it was going to a friend of my brothers and he didnt like him, so it was just stuffed with newspaper, a skim of filler, and a quick blow over.... looked fine.

I once made a MK3 cortina rear vallance out of aluminium mesh and filler... took about 3 tins! ;D
|
|
... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

One of my Beetles has a skim of about an inch of filler over the whole lot. I thought it looked a bit odd-shaped in places. Prevent that from happening again by cutting a perfect life-size beetle-shaped hole out of a large sheet of MDF and using it as a simple go/no-go gauge when inspecting a prospective purchase. Try and drive through the hole - if the beetle wont fit, its got too much bog on it. (Don't use your existing bog-covered beetle as the template though).

My dad had a Fiat 131 with door botoms made from wire mesh and filler. Come to think of it he had a bedford CF like that too ;D
Might be a good opportunity to flare the arches a little. Maybe not as extreme as bubble arches, something a little more sedate perhaps

Years ago it was the accepted new way to repair cars though. Polyester filler was a revolutionary new way to do things, before that they had lead, a gas torch and a big file. Ah well.
No chance of flaring the arches. I like my cars narrow and I like my running gear tucked underneath. If you can see the front wheels when viewing down the side the it ain't narrow enough up front!

Really odd like you say, I have never seen a car with such a good chassis and shoddy bodywork.

I don't mean wide, I mean just a little wider, even if it's only 20mm each side Still too wide! Looks like I might have sourced a repair panel, yeah already! Depending where the guy is he chopped up his old race car and kept the rear quarters. Quote: They're in grey primer with about 200 gallons of cellulose metalflake & airbrushed bubbles. Mmm, I'm thinking change of plan with the paintwork now...

Studded snow tyres and motorways don't really mix They get too hot and fall apart...... bit like that one really Normal snow/winter tyres are fun too.... after a run up to norfolk to see the folks in the Audi, once I turned off on to my Favourite twisty route, it was leaving 4 big darkies on every corner ;D tyres were just smearing themselves onto the road ;D.... they are superb when the temperature drops off though
