I've noticed that my various retro-related Googlings have been turning up lots more retro-rides threads and pics lately. This is really cool. But why is it happening? Is it because RR has gotten lots bigger and so has a higher profile?
What's not so cool is when I'm looking for something new to post up and I get a ton of results that are from RR in the first place! ;D

It's because google have started personalizing your searches based on your browsing history there is an optoion to turn it off or you could just clear cache, clear prvate data and try again. (sos, I'd love it to be cos RR is a global phenomenon to rival twitter, but it isn't. Google gives you lots of RR results cos you spend a lot of time on RR)

That's awful - why would I want to "find" stuff on sites I already visit?! Thanks for the heads-up SOC.

At least they are indexing us again,.. they stopped for a while.. If you go into google front page and type retro ... fifth down on the suggests is retro rides ... so we're pretty popular

I had a look at the Google search settings and preferences but couldn't find anything that toggles the use of personal browsing history data.

heh. I can't find an option for it either (hadn't looked before, but you know what they say about assuming stuff..) I do know that I get different results from google if I use my usual browser than if I use a fresh setup (like a liveCD). Changes if I sign out my google account too. example... wioth a cleared cache and not logged into iGoogle, I google "retro" like hotwire suggests. I get 1/ retroevents.com 2/ wikipedia/retro 3/ retrotogo.com then search results for "retro clothing" for the rest of the page. page 2 is retro studios, retro thing, raceretro.com, consolepassion.co.uk, myvintage, digitalretro, retro247, retrochick, retrovinyl and photobucket (retro photos). retroscenemag is at the top of page 7 retrocarclub (remember them?) makes page 21 Retro Rides is page 51, result no 501 at least there is a related search at the bottom of each page for "retro rides" and balderdash, I just noticed, thats the WRONG retro rides... double and triple lol... I'm not looking any further. can't be bothered, even with grep.

not in the drop down either. It's there like you say if I sign into google, or use my other PC, but on this "cleared" system it's like we don't exist...

That is interesting SOC... I guess the tracking stuff is more subtle than I thought... I've noticed I've also got retro furniture on my suggestions list.. which is pretty relevant to my interests too..
Damn google and their being clever/intrusive.

I don't think you can turn it off. I think it is done by linking your IP address, session id, cookie data, all that stuff. Do you use Gmail, iGoogle, Google Calendar or any of these? You look at the data Google collects, stores and mines about you the individual user and POW its a conspiracy theorist's dream!

I found some info on Google personalized search, and a link from Google instructing how to turn it off.

TBH a "personalised search experiance" is probably a winner for most stuff. The stuff they do to track what you do is not a user setting. They have a HUGE data centre with all manner of stuff in it... motherjones.com/politics/2006/10/google-evil

^^ lol. I'll keep searching "google is evil" twice a day forever then. I suggest everyone does likewise until their servers melt.
