I've been using this service
simply text CHECK (then space) and Reg u want to check to 88600.
Instant response.
total cost £1.50 & usual text cost.
Anyone else know any better value ones? has found me a car with accidents in its history the eBayer had "forgot" to put in his advert...

I've been using this one www.cartextcheck.co.uk/ Text the reg to 83600 and it comes back a couple seconds later with two texts of info (one about the car itself (colour changes, last few digits of VIN, name and model etc.) and another about the car's legal status.. last one I checked said 'reported stolen 29/10/2002, ownership rests with insurers' or something like that. We didn't buy it! I think it sends a third text trying to peddle further services but I don't pay attention to that one.. £3 well spent but if the one Alistair has been using is as good at half the cost it sounds good to me!

If any of you guys on here want an hpi check on something just pm me the reg plate and I'll do it for you at work same or next day. Obviously don't take the micky and send me 10 plates but I don't mind doing the odd few for anyone pm it to me and when I hpi it I'll send a copy of the full hpi text that will usually include chassis, no' of owners, engine number, import/export marker, reg changes, colour changes, any finance company interest, if written off etc etc

What other info did it give, did it give you the VIN? Make, Model, engine size. Last 4 digits of VIN Date of registration Number of colour changes Recorded Stolen? Recorded scrapped? Any history of being recorded as a loss by insurance company? Its missing secured finance and the ability to confirm the registered keeper address is valid (not sure if HPI does that last one on a standard check any more) And you can do it standing in front of the car while checking it out or negotiating a deal.

There is an iPhone app called MyCarCheck, same stuff as mytextcheck(£3). but you can do free vehicle lookups (stick the reg in and get the make, model, colour and engine size)

Not meaning to pee on anyone's bonfire, but I understood that some of the text HPi services used secondhand information meaning they are not quite as reliable as a full HPi check. Is there any truth in this?

The reason HPI and Experian are so expensive is because the offer an indemnity to cover you if they're wrong i.e. it is a total loss and they say it isn't you can make a claim against them. Most franchise dealers make it a requirement that this is done on any part exchange in case something goes t*ts up. The finance companies will only deal with HPI and Experian so that's why you can't get it through anyone but them. I'd not touch a car with finance on it. I'm not saying they'd be able to get it back off you but you could be damn sure they give it a good go and it's not worth the hassle.
This is what experian say about it "If a loan or hire purchase agreement is still outstanding and you buy the car, the finance company will retain a legal interest in it until the loan is repaid in full and they may repossess it. You may believe that as an innocent purchaser you would retain good title on a vehicle in this situation. However, you would have to prove your status as an innocent purchaser to the finance company which, in practice, is an extremely difficult and lengthy process. "

I have a receipt to state that he will clear the finance to give me free title to the car and he signed it today any good? It's only a problem if he stops making the repayments or doesn't clear the finance. I wouldn't worry about it if the deal's done. If there's a problem I'm sure you'd find out soon enough.
