Round at my girlfriend's parents farm, I dug out an old trail bike. Its been in a barn for 10 years and not moved since they got a quad bike. Its had all the lights and instruments stripped off and has a few plastics missing. After dragging it out the barn, removing the minging air filter, checking for spark, draining stale fuel and topping up with some 2 stroke premix we ran it off and bump started it. It ran but stalls on letting the clutch out. Also won't kick start. Gear selection is a little hit and miss. I removed the carb and cleaned out a load of build up but ran out of petrol to try starting again. I'm going to see if I can get it to run well enough to do a few laps of the field and then I'll strip down and give it some paint. This just dropped through the door: A Haynes manual of the old school where they actually show you how to strip the engine and gearbox right down. Its never going to be road legal but I will use it for running round the farm and lanes on. Starting a shopping list: Air filter Fresh gearbox oil Chain and sprockets Big tin of black hammerite And probably a hundred other things when I come to take it apart. First time I've ever had a motorbike let alone a 2 stroke water cooled beast so any advice appreciated. To be honest I was staggered the thing started and ran, now I have these wild ideas of rebuilding it.

Nice looking little bike mate. Just FYI, bikes in the Readers' Rides section are strongly frowned upon, this should be in Readers' Other Modifications. Good luck with it, looks like you've got a lot of work ahead of you.

was8v, great find, if your not going on the road, find a plastic bottle with one side cut out to place over the k&n filter you got, other wise it'll just fill with wibblepoo straight away again, that is if your gonna use that filter, i'd find the standard airbox, Don't forget to jet up if you running prefix and with out a filterbox

Wow, thanks for the responses!
waveman - thanks for the heads up!
Rolphy - Thanks - I may well be in touch soon! Lovely RD BTW!
TerraRoot - Yes It had a milk bottle over the filter originally, still full of mud tho. Will put another back before using it in anger. Original airbox would be preferable, I've no idea how it is jetted now. It was originally bought from a very good local motorbike shop rebuilt as it is - if they supplied it with the cone I hope they had jetted it correctly. The exhaust silencer seems to be the worng one (wrong angle). I guess I'll see how it runs when rebuilt.
Hondaman - PMed back. I doubt its worth much and if so then I'd rather keep it as a project.
I've been told that its always been hard to kick start (always been bump started), and now the running problems. I've been told by a mate that this might be down to poor compression - so I may need to tear the engine apart and see the bore and rings. Does this sound likely?
I'm going to remove the head and de-carbon the piston etc before going that far - How do I tell if the rings are worn - is there a way without tearig it apart and measuring?

Compression tests seem fairly easy, although I haven't had the chance to do one yet another guy did on my motor mechanics course. All it seemed to involve was sticking a pressure gauge into the spark plug hole. That's all I saw of it, I assumed you'd then just kick the engine over and see if the pressure goes to the manufacturer's recommended spec. Of course you'll need to get hold of the gauge (maybe ask a garage if you could use theirs or have them do it?). Obviously if it turns out the compression is low you'll have no option but to disassemble the engine.

Sum of my recent work:
Compression fine, oil tank missing completely hence mixing oil in the petrol. Apparently came that way from the motorbike shop so hopefully its jetted right.
Oh and the fuel filter was clogged so binned it and am awaiting a new one along with new spark plug and a few other bits.

They did not come from the factory with out oil injection, lot's of old beardies remove the oil pump for unfathomably stupid reasons. with oil mixed petrol non standard silencer and a hacked on air filter, I would be very very worried if hasn't been jetted up. it should have the standard jet size in the hyanes manual.

Ah ok so I can measure whats in it and see if its different. Can you normally buy jets off the shelf designed for different filters and exhausts?! If so where from / if not any pointers on how to "jet" it correctly? I'm also thinking about colour schemes (ahead of myself I know). 1) Gloss black frame and Matt Black tanks and mudguards 2) Terminator 2 eighties style red and white 3) Camo matt greens What do people think? Or should I just clean it and leave the "patina"!?

i've a runner 180 with the oil pump powered by a rubber band, it's like 66p to replace it and i order a new one when i ever i pick up any other bit's, can't be to careful! however yamaha pump are crank driven and extremely reliable, for the lolz look up what some ejits do to rgv250/rs250 their system injects directly to the bearings and the cylinder wall around the exhaust port, insta heat seize. was8v the jet size is stamped on the jet, easy to identify, let me know what manual says is standard and i'l give you a guesstimate on a jet size, no guarantee's it'll be right hard to jet things over the net ya know. Camo matt green i think, the bike in t2 was a honda xr, a four stroke with a two stroke sound track, grrr
