hi everyone basically my friend has decided that he wants to ride motocross like i do, and wants to buy his own bike. he knows how to ride, but is not exacltly an expert . also, he only has up to around £350-£400 to spend. i think a field bike is a good choice because he can still ride with me and get a feel for offroad biking. i have a part time job at a metal works so strengthening the frame is fine. a 125 four stroke is what hes after because itl be predictable to learn on, and easy to maintain. so, any thoughts on what to get?

Not sure how long this thread will last what with its none carness but the bestest bike depends alot on the size of the rider. Yam TTR 125'S are great and you should get one in budget, they are a bit more off- road based than the xlr but a bit smaller too. Also worth a nod honda crf100/xr100 or the legendary Yam rt100 or ty80. XLR, pretty good learner trail bike but shall prob outgrow it in terms of performance and suspension pretty quickly. Electric start only tends to be a pain at some point but think some had kickers too. My 2p = the venrable Yam dt125, yes it's a 2 smoker (and all the better for it) but they are easier (and cheaper)to fix than the 4 strokes should they go pop and still offer the best all round cheap trail bike package IMO. I used one on road on L plates for years and off road including racing (enduros) for years and still enjoy riding some spanky new (last in the uk) ones at work. They rule ;D. Is a tall un though as said depends on size. Also beware the cheap trailbike as often they are chordy, check them frame and engine numbers

^^^ what i was thinking, the tyres on my ktm would only just come into that budget.
you would need to double it atleast really and probably go with 2 stroke. £800 would buy you a nice bike to play with and a nicer example would be easier to sell on for decent coin

problem is, £350-£400 is going to get you a stolen bike, tbh. Got a 89 dtr for £400 all staright and true with v5, blew it up after some enduro action standing in for my broken crosser. No surpize really cheap bikes do tend to be bent or nearly broken, £500 road iron holding out nicely though.

thanks for the replys! He was thinking of a ttr but the problem is that to handle any jumps they really need something along the lines of a bbr cradle frame. A ty80 isnt really the kind of thing hes looking for, but thanks for the suggestion. My kwak was around £1000, but hes just wants to see if hes really going to enjoy the sport before making a large investment. a dt125 sounds good. how rapid is the powerband? i ask because my race bike gives you a real kick in the rear when it comes on song, but then again thats purpose made! thanks

dtr's a strong motor but no mx bike, that said matey had one in a kx chassis with the kx carb botched on and it went like the clappers. Engine is good for 110mph in tzr form mainly down to the less restrictive exhaust on the road bike (tzr). Strong motor and chasis but slightly soft suspension (what with being a trail bike and all) good for learners but equally capable of holding there own against bigger better more expensive tackle.
After all it is the rider that makes the most difference and it's a beautiful thing to whoop Johny come lately on his mega buck whiz bang fantastic with your shonky old popper on L plates ;D

As been said, your not going to get much with that budget ... but the DTR is a great bike. Just get that valve open
