Saw this 1981/82 1.2GL 5dr (5-speed) today at a garage near Norwich, think it's been mentioned here before but obviously still not sold. Done 54k, two owners, seems clean but looks to be getting crumbly at sill ends/arches, and may have been filled there before. They want £500 for it, but as it's not gone yet I reckon they'd acept an offer. What does anyone else think? I'm tempted myself if it's £250-300 (cheap tax, and I've got a spare classic insurance policy having sold the 180B), but if anyone is desperate for it I can put them in touch. PM me. Is there a standard minimum value set by exporters/oval racers? 5-speed worth anything? Don't want to break it, but nice to know should rust eventually become terminal. Oh, anything odd to watch for? What's the 1.2 like? Thanks in anticipation.

I agree wit. Cocacola, and then a bit. Wave 300 sheets under their noses and they'll bite your hand off (as they are clearly peddlers of more dreary affairs judging by its neighBORING vectra).
Then shuv it on the bay including the essential 'RWD track day not AE86' text in the listing title. BONUS!!!!!!11one!!2

Thanks. Don't think I'd go more than £300, just don't need another car that much. Even with a fresh ticket, I know from experience that when you put these low miles motors into regular use you spend a few weeks chasing through battery, clutch and cooling system problems.
Still, if it gives me few cheap months' driving until the yellow Skyline is sorted and I move it on in the summer using the NickB approach don't think I'll lose out much. Never had a Toyota of my own on the road.
We'll see what a phone call in the next few days does......

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Just rung them, sounds like £300 with a fresh MoT is a deal (depending on what it actually needs).

read a street machine from 2000 over the weekend, it had a green oval racer starlet with a lad who drives it on the road and took it to the strip. it has a 2.2 pinto with the trimmings. drilled out bits ere and there, but did a 12.49 quarter mile I'm sure that what it said! yeah get it they'll never see you coming ;D

Black with orange tints now, big into drifting... That is a very expensive Pinto he's got in there though, retail would be getting on for 10K...

That is a posh pinto then, I guess he chose that over a cossie etc as him/his lot are used to working on those old escorts. impressive to read about though!

Starlet is a car that’s been on my radar for many years, as I’ve been attending short oval races since the 80’s. They took over from Escorts in the National Hot Rods, and this filtered through into the lesser Rod classes and Stock Car categories. A full-on Starlet National from this period looks truly fantastic.
Because of this you’d always see one or two in the car park with big arches (usually cut-down steel trailer ones), wide wheels etc.
Being a 5dr in bronze makes this one just that bit more subtle and amusing. Assuming I get it, mod’s will be extremely limited – can you get lowering springs for them off the shelf? If wheels get changed then it’ll probably be a set of my spare 14” Datsun alloys unless I find some interesting and cheap 13’s. Engine will remain stock – it only weighs 700-odd kg, so the 1.2 isn’t doing much work and I like the idea of something which will give me half-decent economy. However I do agree with Reanimation, the motor out of an AE86 or something would make it a real stealth machine!

Deal done! Should be picking it up sometime later next week.
Unlikely, but anyone want a 1.0 Starlet engine, very low mileage only used for one year or so? Where I bought the car from used to be a Toyota dealers many years ago (they sold mine new), and at the time they had a customer with a 1.0 Starlet who found it a bit gutless. Rather than just p/x it against a 1.2 or 1.3, they got a new bigger engine and fitted that into her existing car. Wonder if she still had the 4-speed? Anyway, the old 1.0 lump has sat in their workshop ever since, still turns over by hand.
More on my new car in Reader's Rides next week. In the meantime, anyone got wheels that would fit? Even slightly wider Toyota steels would be good, it's currently got 145x13's on 4.5" rims.....

I've got a 1200s Starlet in green in very good condition I'm thinking now may be the time to sell.
