Well we had a bit of a "garage Meeting" the other night... I was trying to decide what to do with the Kadett and Baby Zetec, re fuelling etc with Dave (IRSM) and Alex..(nother mate) The choices were: R1 Throttle bodies and Emerald/megasquirt Supercharger, Cooper S Throttle body and same ECU choices Supercharger, Gordini Turbo Suck through Carb and manifold, with Ford EDIS/Standalone ignition Bike Carbs and Ignition as above .............. Came to the conclusion that it will ultimately be supercharged with a Fully Mappable EMS, so the R1 TB`s were surplus to Requirements In the interests of Simplicity to get the car up and running on its new Engine, I decided to go the Bike Carb route for now ;D The Charger installation can be sorted once I know the engine/gearbox/driveline works ok ;D So I just won These ;D R6 Carbs, which will go on a Fabricated manifold (Or a chopped down standard Plastic one if the spacing is close enough ;D I also had this delivered today ;D A nice Honda S2000 exhaust Header, complete with heat shields ;D And you wont beleive how close the bolt centres and port centres are ;D I might even get away with modding the standard flange rather than making a new one.... The engine is stripped of all the curse word, and it is superlight ;D apparently, fully dressed with all ancillaries they only weight 80kg.... which is about half what the standard 1200 weighs ;D Going to see ImReallySlowMe tomorrow and hopefully get the seat rails welded in and the new seats mounted... so its all coming along nicely ;D Cheers Dom

Did you get a zetec with knackered big end bearings, if so did you manage to rebuild it? I did indeed buy one with a rumbly bottom end........ The rings wear and they start burning oil, then the level drops and they run the big ends Cost me the princley sum of £30 complete apart from Starter and alternator Looks like Burtons are now doing Rings and Shells for them ;D so for £100 or so I`ll have an all alloy 80kg, 100hp 1400cc 16v ;D I will update once I have cleared some space in the Garage and on the bench to Strip it Now Daves Turbo motor is back in the Van I can borrow the engine stand as well

is that 100hp standard? and £100 for all rings and shells? I think officially they are 92hp but with a much less restrictive intake and exhaust then yes 100hp is a pretty realistic figure. £100 is what it will have cost me in monetry terms to buy the engine, the rings and the shells, as well as a bottom end gasket kit nabbed on ebay The time in researching it and getting hold of the information and build specs is another story Everyone says they cant be rebuilt...... throw away and buy another one, I didnt beleive that to be the case, its only a 4 cylinder 4 stroke FFS Oh and if you want to chuck some money at them Shawspeed have a 210hp kit using the 1600cc version ;D

My brother in laws father has a Jaguar XKR and an oil pipe burst to the oil cooler late one night coming back from Scotland and the bottom ends gone on that and hes been told they cant be rebuiltas they also have the same type of rods. £8000 for a new engine So hes planning to try to rebuild that.

PM Sent fella Rods arent the problem, far from it, cracked rods align perfectly every time, thats why they do it Everyone who supposedly knew anything about Zetecs was talking BS about it all being Laser aligned Caps and mains etc An engine comes off the line every 47 seconds they havent got time to laser align anything..... its the opposite if anything... need to be able to (metaphorically speaking) chuck it in from the other side of the plant and do the bolts up ;D I know what running clearances it needs so we will see when I get it apart ;D

Yep..... don't baby it don't cruise it, put it under load, vary the load through all revs and gears.... You know what they say...... Run em in Slow..... They stay slow ;D Seriously if you want to open up a debate, have a look here: www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm ;D ;D

Yeah rings want pushing into the boreds under load, gets em to match the bores nicely. If the bearing have been replaced aswell however then they need a little more cosseting, i think thats where the confusion comes from. The top needs thrashing and the bottom needs looking after, so what do you do?
I kept the revs low but made sure i loaded it up on hills for the rings, seems to have worked!
