For my college project i am making up an exhaust manifold, unfortunatly I'm abit tight for space, therefore need quite a tight bend at the top. what i need is four identical peices, with one 90degree bend in each, the pipe i have is mild steel, 27mm ID with about 1.5-2mm wall. i need the tightest bend possible, i will obviously be willing to pay whoever will do it, as well as post them a section of the pipe I'm using. Cheers Nick

You can buy hollow donuts of steel tube. Don't know how they make it but sounds ideal for what you want. Inner radius for 27mm is likely to be 10mm or less. We chopped a 4" diameter donut to make an inlet plenum and the rad on the inside of that was only about 15mm

You can buy hollow donuts of steel tube. Don't know how they make it they are spun in halves from flat round rings of metal and then welded together. I was looking round a metal spinning shop yesterday and they were making 12" ID pipe "dohnuts" for exhaust tubing. Theres a huge amount of skill involved ! (and not for the feint hearted !)

just looked at a place that sells a couple of pipe benders for under £30 but it can only do up to 22mm, you not got a exhaust place near you? like power flow or something maybe they would bend it in there machince for a small fee?

you don't actually want a pipe bender, you need a tube bender. Pipe benders are what plumbers use, and are f*cking useless for tube. And tube benders are considerably more expensive than pipe benders. if you have trouble i'd ask one of the cage builders or local engineers if they might be able to help.

yeah, when i needed anything built at uni, i'd head down to my local metal workers, bat my eye lids, and i'd get all my stuff fabricated and welded for free. They must be into a bit of man-ass in newport ;D

What you need is a proper mandrel bender.. don't make the mistake of buying one of those things made out of a bottle jack. They are for bending thickwalled tube like gas main etc and don't give you a smooth bend more like a deformed kink.
