www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/11/06/california.stolen.vw/index.html?eref=rss_topstoriesSeems I hear about one of these every year or so but those are only the "wow" ones. A *lot* of stolen cars turn up in shipping crates these days. Not just late model stuff too. I bet the German buyer of this van is curse word to be out of pocket to the tune of one mint '65 VW type 2.... Not small money either... Makes you think about the risks of self importing doesn't it.

It's good to know that they check stuff like that, but nobody really wins.
The owner was paid out long, long ago. The German who bought it (with no doubt honest intentions) is possibly severely out of pocket, even if the US agent pays him back, someone will end up being out of pocket somewhere along the lines as that van has clearly had a lot of money spent on it.
And then finally, it now belongs to an insurance company who probably don't know/care about it that much, so it just gets sold on, the $27,000 simply vanishing into their no doubt healthy bank account.
Still, it's a fantastic looking van!
