evening, just thought id ask opinions!
my mk5 1.6 tina, wont play ball in the cold, or when its been left for long enough for it to completley cool down, itl crank over no problems, and will spluter but not fire completly. however with a bump itl go pretty much straight away, ive checked the obvious plugs n leads etc and they all seem alright, once its running it runs mint, and can be turned of and fired back over without any hastle.
ballast resistor comes 2 mind? can i bypas this by a wire from battery to coil just to get it fired up (obviously take the wire of once its running)
all opinions welcome before i spend a nite ar5ing around tryin 2 find out the problem!

Won't be the ballast... that only gets used while the engine is running, while it's cranking it's on a straight 12v feed ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Poor cold starting is a symptom of *something* but it could be a few things. I'd be changing the plugs (they can look alright but be worn out) checking the timing (points, condensor) and looking really closely at the coil HT terminal, the leads and the distributor cap in the dark with the engine running. It's often HT tracking to earth robbing your spark so the plugs can't fire the cold, dense starting mixture. After all of that, I'd be into the carb next, but TBH even if it is a VV they usually start ok ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

even when the pinto was new they could be a bit temperamental starting from cold. the way i get my transit to fire up from cold is two stamps on the loud pedal to pump a bit of juice in then it fires straight up. hope this helps ttfn glenn

If it bumps easily but wont fire on the key its normally a lack of electrical power at the spark plug due to the drain of the starter motor, that can be caused by pretty much any part of the ignition system, or even a weak battery, i'd try a newish battery off something else on it (or even jump leads from a running car) before buying lots of stuff.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

Make sure those points are opening nice and wide and closing properly and they're clean.
Out of routine I normally replace all the plugs, leads, cap and condensor for new so I know I've got good reliable stuff on there.

Also if your still on the VV carb I'd advise to get shut and find a 32/36 dgav, preferably with a manual choke ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) I have never had anything but trouble from VV carbs so if I ever get a pinto with one its the first thing in the bin! Good luck ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

If it starts sopt on with a bump first thing id check is the 12V boost wire on the starter it could have come off, or somone has fitted an EFi starter which doesnt have the extra post. Alternativly the starter could be on the way out and drawing so much current that theres not enough left for an extra fat spark thats needed when its cold ? Get a volt meter on the coil live and get somone to crank the engine over, it should jump from 9 V to 11 or 12 whilst cranking. After that id go with the other suggestions already posted ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)
